What's the Matter with Indymedia?
Jennifer Whitney ,
"Conceived initially to allow everybody to 'be the media,' Indymedia is plagued by everything from fascist messages to paralyzing ideology to good old fashioned laziness."
This article is part of a special issue of LiP magazine called, "Constructively Negative: Sacred Cows", in
which pretty much all the articles attack various things the left
takes for granted as being awesome:
"Featuring the gleeful evisceration of such sacred cows as pacifism,
organics, woman-centered feminism, work, representative democracy,
irony, and consensus, among many others." (from the website
http://www.lipmagazine.org/, describing the issue )

"What's wrong with Mimicking Corporate Media"
salaud,
-- A response to Jennifer Whitney's article on indymedia, which can be found here The spirit of critique and wanting to help move indymedia forward is something I really appreciate. However, Jennifer Whitney's article, "The Good, The Bad, & (sic) The Ugly: "What's the Matter with Indymedia?" is one part critique, and two parts personal axe grinding, three parts "Ra! Ra! UC, NYC, 501-c(3) IMC" . Beyond the fact that the article is so deliberately misleading in many ways, it should be critiqued on the facts and arguments that it proposes about editorial policy and the mission of indymedia. To its credit, this article raises some of the right types of questions about indymedia's effectiveness and methods, but to its detriment, gives all the wrong answers. Rather, it gives short sighted answers or all the same 'ol answers.

Among the speakers were his surviving partner and fellow activist, Barbara MacKenzie, many medical marijuana users who recalled how McWilliams had helped them, and other community activists and supporters.

I did not write it and don't know who did. But maybe it'll get you thinking about how badly the Bush administration has ruined our nation's sense of self, our unity, and our common sense. And maybe give you a laugh.

Soldiers in Iraq blog
bruce,
"The public’s own inability to see its nationalistic fervor is what’s actually hindering people from seeing the overall picture. If they can try to understand it through the eyes and from the shoes of the Iraqis, they can understand that war is shit, and it’s not accomplishing anything."

San Diego Escalates its War on Free Speech: Free Radio San Diego 96.9 Raided
lotu5,
Two activists are still in jail for defending the first amendment in the recent Grand Jury witchhunt. More activists are receiving subpoenas daily. Today the war on Free Speech in San Diego was escalated to a new level.
This morning, July 21st, at approximately 11AM, Pirate 96.9 was raided by the FCC.
Interview on radioActive sanDiego | Interview on Free Radio Santa Cruz | Please replay on your free, community and pirate radio stations.
The broadcast location of Pirate 96.9 was raided by a number of FCC agents with marshalls. No one was present at the location, so the FCC broke the locks on their doors, entered by force, took their equipment and left. They left a warrant behind them.
The antenna was taken as well as a number of other major components of broadcasting equipment.
Pirate 96.9 is currently off the air. More information at http://pirate969.org

Karl Rove: PARENTS ABANDONED HIM--George Bush
Clayton Hallmark,
Today Bush says he will fire for convictions, not mere leaks. The consensus of lawyers is that Karl Rove will be indicted in the Valerie Plame outing case -- and not for what you think. Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald appears to have a slam-dunk case under Title 18, Sec. 641, USC (which is NOT about outing a covert agent) just as the DOJ did for leaker Jonathan Randel, who got a year in prison. Karl Rove was abandoned by both of his parents -- the man he called Dad left home, Rove found out "Dad" wasn't his father after all (his aunt and uncle "outed" this at the dinner table), and his mother committed suicide.

“Lavender and Red”: Leslie Feinberg Speaks
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Transgender Lesbian activist and author Leslie Feinberg spoke at the International Action Center in San Diego July 17 and discussed her series "Lavender and Red," published in "Workers' World" newspaper. She argued that not only does the U.S. need a socialist revolution but that racism, sexism, anti-Queer prejudices and all other forms of oppression need to be dealt with now, not "after the revolution," to build the unity needed to win. Feinberg also discussed the so-called "REAL ID Act" and how it will hurt Transgender people and women who've fled abusive relationships, as well as the undocumented immigrants it deliberately targeted.

“Guantánamo” Play Dramatizes Rights Abuses
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The British play "Guantánamo: 'Honor Bound to Defend Freedom'" was presented in a staged reading at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church July 12. Drawn exclusively from testimony from Guantánamo detainees and public statements by defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other officials, the play brings a human dimension to the allegations of torture and abuse of the Guantánamo prisoners by the U.S. military. After the play, local attorney and law professor Marjorie Cohn led a discussion which touched on recent allegations in the "New Yorker" that the abuses at Guantánamo are part of a deliberate psychological strategy to wear down the prisoners and get them to talk.

Campo - 150 March in Support of Human Rights
Jonathan / Onto,
This just in from Campo... About 150 people traveled to the desert from all parts of California to support the human rights of immigrants. The group gathered in Campo this weekend to let the Border Patrol Auxiliary know that most Californians are against their vigilantly patrols of the border.
The Border Patrol Auxiliary is a spin off of the Minute Men. They had planned to meet at the VFW today to plan their vigilante actions. When the marchers reached the VFW the Minute Men were nowhere to be found. Apparently they met elsewhere to avoid being faced with how people feel about their actions.

The London bombings: an "inside job"?
a Christian,
Attentive journalists have already uncovered solid evidence that the London bombings were an "inside job," orchestrated--or at least "allowed" to happen--by industry and government insiders (US, UK, and/or others). Just like last year's Madrid train bombings, and just like 9/11. Read the following aticles and book excerpts, and spread the word! WE HAVE A CHANCE RIGHT NOW--BEFORE THE GOVERNMENT AND MEDIA SPIN A MYTH THAT WILL EXPAND THEIR WARS--TO DEMAND AND LEARN THE TRUTH.
