Kushner's Play "Bright Room" All Too Timely
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Though written in 1987, Tony Kushner's play "A Bright Room Called Day" — the work of a playwright who is "out" both as a Gay man and as a socialist — seems all too timely in the era of George Bush II and American imperialism's push for world domination. Its subject is the paralysis and fatal divisiveness within the German Left in 1932, just before Adolf Hitler and the Nazis took power, and the political and personal dilemmas Kushner dramatizes so effectively in his script are those American Leftists are likely to face as the U.S. becomes increasingly imperialist and fascist. The play runs at Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Boulevard, through December 4.

Hypocrisy at the Union-Tribune
Silly Sally,
The hounds at said paper, in their seemingly santimonious, blue nose, Puritanal zeal, apparently feel there is something particularly egregious about a sex scandal that denies the claustrophobic mores of the Judeo-Christian church. Who is it that really gives much of a rip whether strippers and nightclub owners make more money off sexually starved “adults” that “voluntarily” frequent such places?

France: Racism, poverty fuel rebellion
Fred Goldstein,
The working class leadership in France has been weak on this question and downright reactionary at times. Right now they need to stop retreating. They must not confine themselves to mere protests against reactionary measures of repression. They need to demand that all the cops be withdrawn, that the emergency decrees be revoked. They need to come out for the justified rebellion.
The rebellious youth must be embraced as part of the working class. They may be unemployed, underemployed and/or unorganized, but right now they are potentially the greatest allies of the organized workers. They have overwhelmed a part of the state. They are mobilized and if they were to be joined by a solidarity strike against racism, poverty and oppression, the entire working class could push the ruling class offensive back.
It would be a mirror, but on a grander scale, of when the French workers in 1968 followed the students with a general strike and shook the ground under French capitalism. It is the lack of understanding of the national question, of the colonial question, of the importance of coming out against national oppression, that now stands in the way of a united struggle against capitalist exploitation itself. This must be overcome.

Pirate and FCC Activity in San Diego
repost from diymedia.net,
California: there's been lots happening in San Diego. 106.9FM has voluntary signed off after running out of funds to broadcast. According to the station blog it's hoped the hiatus is only temporary. Meanwhile Free Radio San Diego returned to the air over Halloween weekend, three months after it was raided and cleaned out by the FCC. The signal strength is reportedly much weaker. San Diego has also recently been the site of some serious FCC enforcement involving other forms of unlicensed operation. Specifically, the use of point-to-point microwave radio communications between corporations in the San Diego area and "sister companies" located over the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana. The FCC has issued 11 Notices of Apparent Liability against 10 companies, seeking to collect a total of $86,000. | Company | Proposed Fine | | Anderson Desk Company | $10,000 | | International Customs Brokers | $4,000 | | Kojo Worldwide Corporation | $10,000 | | Lamkin Corporation | $4,000 | | More Enterprises Communications Network | $10,000 | | Norman Krieger Incorporated | $4,000 | | Pacific Spanish Network, Incorporated | $10,000 | | Pacnet Incorporated | $10,000 / $10,000 | | Tocabi America Corporation | $4,000 | | Uniradio Corporation | $10,000 |
The range in size of proposed fines is primarily based on whether or not a company held a pre-existing license to the sort of radio system they were operating. Most of the dinged companies actually market stuff, like desks, cabinetry, fabrics, and golf grips. They most likely use radio links to communicate sales and order data from the U.S. to production factories in Mexico. Two are transport concerns, tasked to the haulage of stuff cross-border. However, More Enterprises and Uniradio actually operate radio stations, licensed in Mexico but controlled across the border via unauthorized studio-to-transmitter links. This adds to San Diego's unique history of unorthodox radio piracy.

106.9FM Temporary Shutdown, Need for Funds
the 106.9FM urban pirates,
Sadly, we at 106.9FM want to announce that we will be going off of the air temporarily, due to lack of funds. Remaining anonymous and raising funds has proven to be a very difficult task. We raised enough money at our last benefit to cover some of our operating costs, including utilities and internet access. We have also received a few generous donations which have helped us buy equipment for our new wattage upgrade. Unfortunately, we haven't gotten enough donations to continue our broadcast.
