Building Community Through Technology
,

San Diego Indymedia San Diego Indymedia, in our effort to create/build/sustain radical community in San Diego, is announcing two new features of our website. One is our new Radical/Progressive Guide to San Diego, a list of radical spaces and places to shop in San Diego. If you're new to San Diego, or if you've been here for a while, or if you're just looking for a place to put up some flyers for your cool new project, check it out.

Another new feature of San Diego Indymedia is our blogwire, in the right column where the newswire goes. This is still in development, so it may behave strangely, but it seems pretty ready to use. We're collecting a list of radical, progressive and generally lefty bloggers in San Diego and aggregating them onto our site. If you'd like your blog added, first see our blogwire policy and then email us.

Students Denounce Pentagon Surveillance of Counter-Recruitment Activities
from santa cruz indymedia, edited by sd indymedia,

According to a document obtained by NBC News, the Pentagon has been spying on 1,500 “suspicious incidents,” including anti-war and counter-recruitment meetings and actions throughout the nation over the past 10-month period. Democracy now reports "The list included: counter-military recruiting meetings held at a Quaker Meeting House in Lake Forth, Florida. Anti-nuclear protests staged in Nebraska on the 50th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki. An anti-war protest organized by military families outside Fort Bragg in North Carolina. And a rally in San Diego to support war resister Pablo Parades." Democracy Now also interviewed a number of organizers of events which are in the database.

Despite having dealt with both undercover police and university agents involved in the acts of surveillance and repression, the news came as a little shock to many anti-war organizers, reaffirming long-held beliefs about the nature of the U.S. military. 3rd year student Jen Low from Students Against War in Santa Cruz noted the hypocrisy of the government’s messaging, reminding us that, "the notion of the Pentagon spying on peaceful protesters is a major threat to the freedoms that they claim to protect."

Also this week, plans were announced to spend $300 million on a project to spread pro-american news stories in the foreign press, as well as pro-american movelty items such as t-shirts and bumper stickers. One of the corporations given a contract is SAIC, san diego based spy technology manufacturer.

Bob Avakian on Richard Pryor
duko,

Recently I was reading reports of police assaults on Black people and of Black people fighting against the police in Memphis and Miami. This called to mind a story I was told a while back. A rookie cop was riding in his police car with his veteran partner when a report came in that there was a Black man in the vicinity with a gun. As their car screeched around the corner, a young Black man suddenly appeared sprinting up an alley--into a dead end. "Shoot him!", the older cop screamed, "Go on, shoot him-- it's free!"

"It's free!" Think about that for a second. "It's free!" In other words, here's a chance that gets a pig to sweating and salivating with anticipation--a chance to "kill a nigger" with the already provided cover that a Black man--a Black man, any Black man--was reported in the area with a gun. This is an opportunity too good to pass up: "Go on, shoot him--it's free!"

Well, in this case, the rookie was not ready for that--perhaps he was one of those rare ones who joins a police force actually believing the "serve and protect" bullshit-

Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers
M,

Activist San Diego Film Series Presents Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consummers.
When: Sunday December 11th from 4:00-7:00 PM
Where: Activist House: 4246 Wightman St 1 block south of University Ave and 2 blocks west of Fairmont on corner of Van Dyke & Wightman in City Heights.

CONSUMERISM December 2005 -- Activist San Diego film series presents a collection of films for this holiday season. The film series theme for this month will cover several issues related to consumerism and the negative effects that it can have on people and society. We will be showing three films on this topic throughout the month of December. At a time when people are being heavily encouraged to equate the purchase of material goods with love and happiness, true love and happiness take a back seat to what has become a wasteful unquestioning way of life. After the attacks on the world trade center on 9/11, George Bush said that the most patriotic thing one could do was to go shopping…….. These films are an answer to his claims about what it means to be a free and patriotic citizen of the United States of America.

ASD Film Series for the month of December presents:

1. Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers
2. Affluenza -- (To Be Announced)
3. Escape from Affluenza -- (To Be Announced)

All films will have The Media Foundation and AdBusters’s Culture Jamming Anti-commercials before their screening.

Greenpeace using pirate radio in protest
Phlegm, repost by lotu5,

Toxic Technology Yesterday activists with Greenpeace launched a banner-deploying blimp at the international headquarters of Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, California. Supplementing this action was a microradio station broadcasting on 91.3 FM, which told nearby listeners to "contact HP CEO Mark Hurd" about the company's use of toxic chemicals in its products, when safer alternative raw materials abound. It's nice to see the onsite action-based broadcast model is alive and well.

ISO Discusses "Tookie" Williams’ Case
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Stanley “Tookie” Williams, co-founder of the notorious Crips street gang turned anti-gang activist and children’s book writer in prison, is scheduled to be put to death through lethal injection on Tuesday, December 13. The only person who can spare him this fate is California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who alone has the power to pardon him or commute his sentence to life imprisonment. This was the subject of two community events in San Diego, a public forum November 30 and a meeting of the International Socialist Organization (ISO) at San Diego State University December 1, featuring some of the same speakers.

Happy Thanksgiving
bruce,

The people of this State do not yield their sovereignty to the agencies which serve them. The people, in delegating authority, do not give their public servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to know. The people insist on remaining informed so that they may retain control over the instruments they have created.
