The SHORTWAVE REPORT 1/27 LISTEN GLOBALLY!
Dan Roberts,

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (January 27) is up at the website
in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:56)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- Iran responded positively to Russia's offer to enrich uranium for their nuclear power plants, but made threats to renew their own project if referred to the UN Security Council. There is still no agreement between Russia and Ukraine on delivery of natural gas. The European investigation into secret CIA prisons in Eastern Europe said there is evidence of a system of outsourcing of torture by the US..
From NETHERLANDS- Canadian voters elected a conservative government for the first time in 12 years- but the new Prime Minister Stephen Harper is leading a minority government and his hands may be tied on many of his issues. The British government is being sued by servicemen injured in the Iraq occupation, who say that the government is not providing medical and psychiatric care for them.
From CUBA- A report on the International Commission of Inquiry on Crimes Against Humanity, which is considering charges against Geo Bush- Scott Ritter pointed out that the invasion of Iraq was to force regime change, not disarmament. Then a Viewpoint on the status of Luis Posada Carriles, an international terrorist being protected by the Bush administration.
From RUSSIA- Following the bombing of powerlines and natural gas pipelines to Georgia, the Georgian government accused Russia of perpetrating the terrorist acts- Russia denies the charges. The Russian Defense Minister has said that Russia might withdraw from the Treaty of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe- because NATO countries are insisting that Russia withdraw armed forces from Georgia- while the US and NATO create new bases in Eastern Europe.

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm (PST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from
Check out the amazing streams at
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- (13.3MB)

106.9FM Given Notice of $10,000 Fine
sd indymedia,

Free Speech 106.9FM, a pirate radio station in San Diego dedicated to broadcasting the voices of the San Diego community, was recently given a Notice of Apparently Liability for a $10,000 fine. Do you care about freedom of speech, pirate radio and public access to the airwaves? If so, now is the time to show your support. Post a comment here or send them an email at info A[t] 1069fm d0t org . If you want to donate to help, you can do so at their website,  http://1069fm.org .

The excessive fine represents a new intensified attack on free speech by the San Diego bureau of the FCC. It shows that they are willing to not only raid the homes and steal equipment from independent radio operators in San Diego, but they are willing to try to fine them for 10 times the cost of that equipment.

The FCC has said that there are no more frequencies available for radio licenses in San Diego. They are making a joke out of free speech in this city. Below is the full text of the notice as well as the contact info for members of city hall who may be interested in this attack on our city by federal agencies.

Osama Bin Laden in His Own Words
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Randall Hamud (Photo by Charles Nelson) Attorney Randall Hamud spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest January 11 on his new book, "Osama bin Laden: America's Enemy in His Own Words." The book consists of 20 statements by bin Laden with prefaces and summaries by Hamud and footnotes to explain the historical references bin Laden made. The excerpts were translated by scholars who chose to remain anonymous because their ability to fly back and forth from the U.S. to their families in the Middle East might be jeopardized if their connection with this project became known. In his talk, Hamud said that virtually everything the U.S. has done in the so-called "war on terror," from declaring it a "crusade" to invading Iraq, has played into bin Laden's hands and increased his popular appeal among Arabs and Muslims worldwide.

Salvadoran Refugee Tells His Story … Again
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Oskar Torres, actor and screenwriter whose remarkable personal story formed the basis of the film "Innocent Voices," came to San Diego December 30 to introduce the film at a showing sponsored by Activist San Diego to raise money for Salvadoran textile workers. The film tells the story of Chava, an 11-year-old boy growing up in El Salvador during that country's civil war in the 1980's and trying to avoid being kidnapped and forced to serve in the U.S.-backed military against a popular armed struggle.
