Low Turnout, Negative Campaign Sank Busby
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The victory of Republican Brian Bilbray over Democrat Francine Busby is being hailed throughout much of the political establishment and the corporate media as an indication that Republicans don't have to worry about losing Congress this year. San Diego Democratic party chair Jess Durfee and activist Ira Lechner spoke to the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club June 22 to challenge that notion. According to Durfee and Lechner, what really sank Busby's campaign were low voter turnout and a relentlessly negative campaign by both candidates that discouraged many people from voting at all. Durfee argued that Republicans in particular deliberately run such negative campaigns to solidify their base while driving down turnout among those likely to vote Democrat.

Palast Skewers Democrats in New Book
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Journalist, economist and activist Greg Palast came to San Diego June 10 in defiance of his publishers to promote his new book, "Armed Madhouse." The book attacks American politicians of both major parties and celebrates independent figures like Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez, former U.S. Presidential candidate H. Ross Perot and the late Louisiana governor Huey Long. It also offers a provocative explanation of what the war in Iraq is really about — not getting Iraq's oil, but quite the contrary: keeping it off the market in order to raise the price and increase the already swollen profits of Big Oil.

Math Professor: Why "HIV/AIDS" Doesn't Add Up
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Rebecca Culshaw, Ph.D., a mathematics professor at the University of Texas in Tyler, won her Ph.D. by modeling the replication of HIV inside the human body — but her researches eventually led her to the conclusion that HIV, the so-called "AIDS virus," cannot possibly be the cause of the syndrome. In this interview, reprinted from the July 2006 Zenger's Newsmagazine, she explains how fundamentally illogical the HIV/AIDS hypothesis really is and how biologists in particular have broken the rules of science to maintain their false belief that HIV causes AIDS.

AIDS (Hype) at 25
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
In early June the corporate media were swept by a wave of hype surrounding the 25th anniversary of Dr. Michael Gottlieb's identification of a new syndrome in Gay men that later became known as AIDS. This article, repeated from the "First Word" column in the July 2006 Zenger's Newsmagazine, examines the hype surrounding "AIDS at 25" and how the AIDS establishment is getting more and more hysterical in the face of greater public indifference.

BUSH & CHENEY ASSAULT FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
Kenneth J. Theisen,
On Monday, June 26, 2006 the President and Vice-President in a concerted effort launched political attacks on the New York Times and other media for their exposure of the international bank transfer spying program conducted by the Bush administration. These attacks serve two purposes for the Bush regime. First, they are an attempt to intimidate the media into silence about the regime’s crimes. Second, they are meant to shift the discussion about the illegality of these actions to a discussion of what should be done to media outlets that dare to report such actions.

THE LEFT AND THE ISRAEL LOBBY–Joseph Anderson
Joseph Anderson, Berkeley, CA,
Now that Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer have broken the taboo in the mainstream American media establishment of not only pointing out that the Israel lobby exists, but actually analyzing it from their perspective, the only place that open discussion, analysis and debate about the lobby remain firmly taboo is, ironically, ON THE LEFT! It’s a taboo imposed on the left by certain leftist icons and their suppression – if not censorship – of free expression and debate on this topic in progressive venues (lectures, panels, press or broadcast). Even some Palestinian-Americans have been forced to knuckle under to these leftist icons’ denial of the power of the Israel lobby in exchange for those icons’ or certain progressive/leftist groups’ political support.
For example, as of this writing, where is an informed rebuttal to Noam Chomsky's dismissive position on the Lobby or at least an honest, open debate about the lobby on the national radio program Democracy Now? So, I wanted to incisively debunk at least some of the major arguments used by certain Left icons in denying the power and influence of the Israel lobby in U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and in suppressing discussion of its power domestically. Now, some people will bring up a red herring list of other possible influences in U.S. Mideast foreign policy to deny my analysis, but here I am dealing with THE ISRAEL LOBBY and how leftist icons respond to that topic. My ultimate position is: whatever our positions on the lobby, do we get to honestly discuss and debate it in formal public settings? Please read more:

Irish Prison Protest Begins
NIFC - National Irish Freedom Committee,
On Monday 19th June Republican Prisoners Of War (POW's) began a protest action in Maghaberry, this is the first in a series of protests planned by Republican POW’s in the gaol. POW’s are making clear that they will not accept the sub standard conditions on the segregated wing, they will not be criminalised nor will they be intimidated or coerced by the petty restrictions being imposed by prison screws to make the day to day life in the gaol for POW’s more difficult.

Independent Journalists Visit, Report on Iraq
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Independent journalists and filmmakers Mark Manning and Dahr Jamail spoke at the Thomas Jefferson College of Law June 2 and showed a short film, "Caught in the Crossfire," documenting the utter destruction U.S. forces in Iraq leveled against the city of Falloujah in November 2004. Jamail talked about how the U.S. military actions in Iraq have consistently violated international law and how the corporate media helped build support for the war — itself, he argued, a war crime — while Manning said the U.S. people are ultimately responsible for stopping the war in Iraq and bringing their country back to the norms of legal behavior.

Help Us with a Book about Indymedia
NYC-IMC Print Team,
This book would not attempt to be the definitive statement on Indymedia. Rather, it would be an overview of some of the triumphs and struggles of the network over the past five-and-a-half years. Its entries would range from dramatic, stream-of-thought, first-person pieces to more analytic chapters on the meaning of Indymedia. The book, while thoughtful, would avoid being overly academic and would be graphic/picture heavy.

Will Debunking the Exodus “Myth” be Next?
William Hughes,
Hollywood’s version of “The Da Vinci Code” is out. Many Christians consider it a sacrilege. The Vatican and the Opus Dei organization are the bad guys in the flick, which claims Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had a child by him. Interestedly, there is also plenty of evidence that the Exodus story is a fantasy concocted by Jewish scribes. Question: Do you think Hollywood will ever do a movie debunking Israel’s claim to the land of the Palestinians?

SDIMC Film Nite/Critical Mass Ride VIDEO
queer-j brad,
The San Diego Independent Media Center sponsored a Cycling Film Nite, Critical Mass Discussion and Critical Mass Ride on Wednesday, May 24. About 40 people attended the films, and about 35 went on the ride afterwards. The films, Return of the Scorcher and We are Traffic, both by filmmaker Ted White, were inspiring, if a bit long, the discussion was productive, and the ride, although it was laid back, or maybe because it was laid back, was the best I have been on. The first field test of the sdimc helmet cam gave rise to a short, crudely edited video.

Bush, NSA Kill Democracy
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The revelation that since shortly after 9/11 the federal government has received records of virtually every phone call made in the U.S. is a shocker even by the increasingly jaded standards of the "war on terror" era. There are a number of salient points to make about this program: 1) It is patently illegal on its face. 2) It is a symptom of the Bush administration’s visceral contempt for civil liberties, the right of privacy, judicial due process and anything else that would stand in the way of Bush’s radical-Right blueprint to turn the Presidency into a dictatorship. 3) Bush and the members of his administration have systematically lied to the American people about the extent of their spying on them and sought to punish the journalists who have brought these stories to light. 4) The majority of the American people have become so traumatized by 9/11 and the fear-mongering of this administration that they will go along with this latest offense against their liberties.

A Long Walk Home: Moving Film on Sudan
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
"A Long Walk Home," a 42-minute documentary on Sudan produced by a team of San Diego filmmakers and directed by Tiffany Frances Huang, was shown at the Media Arts Center in San Diego May 18 and proved to be an intensely moving depiction of the plight of southern Sudanese refugees stuck in Cairo, Egypt. They flee there in hopes of getting help from the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) — only to wait months or even years before the commission even opens a file on their case. The film isn't all depressing, though; it also shows the dance and theatre group some of the refugees formed to keep their spirits up and celebrate Sudanese culture. Grace Smith, a member of the filmmaking team, appeared at the showing and took questions.

"Pulp!": Pathos Behind the Camp
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The Diversionary Theatre/MOXIE Theatre co-production of "Pulp!," a Lesbian-themed musical by Chicago playwright Patricia Kane, pays homage to the cheap pulp novels about Lesbians published in the 1950's that gave many women-loving women of that era their first insights into how to live a sane and honorable Queer life. Though much of it satirizes the campy conventions of pulp fiction and film noir, Kane draws her characters with genuine emotion and complexity, creating a moving theatrical experience as well as dramatizing an important part of Lesbian history.

Cygnet's Atwater an Acting Tour de Force
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Cygnet Theatre's production of Robert Myers' one-person play "Atwater: Fixin' to Die" offers Jeffrey Jones the opportunity for an acting tour de force as Lee Atwater, who was to the first President Bush what Karl Rove is to the second — his vicious, unprincipled hatchet man. Myers' script never quite resolves the contradiction between Atwater the unashamed race-baiter in his campaigns and Atwater the lover of African-American music and amateur blues player who recorded an album with B. B. King — but the piece does show that the seemingly anarchic, liberated energy of rock ’n’ roll could actually be quite easily harnessed to an ultra-indvidualist Right-wing political agenda.

“Munich” on DVD: Spielberg’s Masterpiece
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Steven Spielberg's film "Munich" was released on DVD on May 8 after a disappointing box office in its theatrical run — largely due to attacks by Right-wing critics who hated the film's moral complexity. All the more reason for progressives to see it: its in-depth depiction of the morals of the so-called "war on terror" and whether, in adopting anything-goes tactics against terrorists, we reduce ourselves to their moral level, makes it not only a must-see but quite likely Spielberg's masterpiece.

White Puts Sex Back in HomoSEXuality
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Queer novelist Edmund White's new autobiography, "My Lives," is a frank exploration of his sexual life and a celebration of the joys of politically incorrect Queer sexuality. It's a slap in the face of all the assimilationists who are trying to portray Gay and Lesbian people as having somehow "risen above" their sexual impulses to adopt the straight norms of marriage, monogamy, parenting, etc. — and the critical attacks on it have been over just that issue: White's glorious political, social and sexual incorrectness in the face of a movement leadership that keeps wanting to force Gay men in particular into molds designed for straight people that don't work for Queers.
