Cuba Estado Libre Asociado de USA
Carlos Burrowes,

Atentamente.
Carlos Burrowes.

SmokeBans Protect Industrial Carcinogen Mfgrs
Watchdog,

On Vote Day, many may vote for Prop. 86 thinking that would be a vote against the Cigarette Industry. It's just the opposite. It's a vote against the victims of that industry that distracts from and supports Big Cig.
This, below is about just one angle that questions the whole "smoking" brouhaha. Question is..how to get folks that don't like "smokey bars" to put that personal thing aside and to prioritize the issue of unjust law and corrupted science, gov't, and media?
A vote against "tobacco" or "smoking" is a vote FOR Big Pesticides and chlorine and dioxin and the rest, including their insurers and investors. True. Why ELSE would mainstream commercial media promote the "smoke free" issue? For our health?

Indymedia: Brad Will, Bravery, Our Common St
salaud,

I think we should all take a look at what is so important about indymedia work and why it is so important and what it means to each one of us. I hope that we draw courage of conviction from Brad's example and that we stand together throughout the indymedia network and as individuals to redouble our efforts. I think you all know that it could have been any one of us. But, it is so much easier for them to take us one at a time. We stand much more strongly together in what we can all be proud of. Our brave common struggle. Indymedia.

Gay Marriage: The Game, Not the Name
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

A response to the New Jersey state supreme court decision of October 25 requiring that the New Jersey legislature offer same-sex couples all the rights and benefits of married heterosexual couples but not necessarily under the term "marriage." The author argues that this represents the best outcome the Queer community can achieve on the marriage issue and that Queers should reject the label of marriage for their relationships, both because agitating for the M-word is politically counterproductive and because in many ways the traditional, historical and cultural norms associated with the term "marriage" do not apply to same-gender relationships in general and Gay male relationships in particular.

Local Volunteer Speaks on Katrina Cleanup
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Jim Brown Encinitas roofing contractor and San Diego Veterans for Peace activist Jim Brown spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest October 24 and discussed his experiences joining the volunteer effort to clean up New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Professionally trained in mold removal — a major need following any sort of flood — Brown offered expertise and tools, told workers what protective equipment they needed, saw the effects of racism first-hand and said many of his fellow volunteers, most of whom were sent by churches, were being moved towards the Left poltically by seeing the havoc left by Katrina and the failure of government at all levels — federal, state and local — to deal with the aftermath.

Senator Barbara Boxer Speaks @ Claire de Lune
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Senator Barbara Boxer U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer spoke at Claire de Lune coffeehouse in North Park October 18 to promote the paperback publication of her novel, "A Time to Run," but most of the questions she got were about politics and the future of the country and the Democratic party. Her response to speculations about future elections was simple: forget about anything past November 7, 2006 and make sure to register, vote and maximize the turnout of Democrats to take back the House and Senate.

Cygnet's "Bug": Paranoia Loves Company
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

John DeCarlo (photo: Randy Rovang) Tracy Letts' play "Bug," playing at Cygnet Theatre until November 12, is a dark fantasy about paranoia, human experimentation, the U.S. military and the way it permanently damages the people who fight its wars, sex, drugs and life among the lumpenproletariat. Well written, staged by Cygnet artistic director Sean Murray and acted by an excellent cast, "Bug" is well worth seeing.

S.D. Library Shows Films by Women of Color
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Myléne Moreno The San Diego Public Library showed two fascinating films by women directors of color in October. Myléne Moreno's "Recalling Orange County" explored issues of racism, anti-bilingual and anti-immigrant sentiment in the successful 2003 campaign to recall Latino activist Nativo Lopez from the Santa Ana school board. Zeinabu irene Davis's "Mother of the River" was a half-hour historical and magical-realist meditation on slavery from the perspective of an 11-year-old slave girl and the very special woman she befriends. Both directors appeared with their films and lamented the lack of funding available for projects like these in the U.S.

The Zapatista Other Campaign in San Diego: Request for Financial, Technical and Media Assistance
sdimc volunteer,

The Sixth Commission of the EZLN will be visiting Tijuana as part of La Otra Campaña October 18-19 (for background and links, click here). We are asking for your assistance with finances, technical matters and media coverage for this historic event.

Because of the need for high speed internet on both sides of the border, the cost for setting up streaming is expected to exceed $600. We are seeking independent media volunteers to help cover the event on both sides of the border and to help participants document their stories on indymedia. San Diego Indymedia will be running an open media center at Voz Alta on the 18th-20th (times forthcoming).

Please donate today to help us get the real story out about this important historic event. We need the support of the community! Any size donation helps! To donate with a credit card, click here and hit the "Make a Donation" button. Specify that your donation is intended for the EZLN visit in the comments box. No to Angelides and Schwarzenegger!
Steven Argue ,

Chicano Park demonstration Angelides criticized Schwarzenegger for his praise for the racist anti-immigrant vigilantes called the “Minutemen” while in the same breath calling for a "guest worker" program that would create a new class of super-exploited worker with no political rights. Under the same type of program in the past U.S. bosses often failed to even pay Mexican workers for their hard labor. The fact that Angelides and the Democrat Party are now calling for this kind of legalization of indentured servitude place them firmly in the same racist camp as Schwarzenegger.

Black, Immigrant Rights Movements Compared
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Joel Geier Veteran civil rights activist and International Socialist Organization (ISO) member Joel Geier spoke to the San Diego ISO September 23 on the history of the African-American civil rights movement and the lessons it has to offer modern-day activists, particularly those working to secure legal status and decent wages for immigrant workers. Geier said that the failures of the civil rights movement — particularly their inability to improve the economic status of most African-Americans — point to the need for political clarity, organization and structure within activist movements.

Waving the Bloody Shirt
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

"Waving the bloody shirt" was a campaign tactic used by the Republican party after the Civil War. Republican orators traveled around the country to remind voters of which major party had supported slavery and tried to appease the South — and which had stood up to it and won the Civil War. Today the Republican party is once again "waving the bloody shirt" in its constant use of 9/11 and the so-called "war on terror" to scare voters into electing Republicans — and new polls suggest that the tactic is working once again, as it did in 2002 and 2004, and that Republicans will be able to keep control of Congress in this year's election despite their abysmal record of failure in Iraq, Katrina, etc.

Int’l. Law Professor Speaks on Lebanon
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Jonathan Graubart San Diego State University international relations and international law professor Jonathan Graubart spoke September 21 at the House of Pacific Relations in Balboa Park and analyzed the recent conflict between Israel and Lebanon in terms of international law. He concluded that while Israel's adversaries, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, committed some violations of international law, Israel's violations were far broader and more serious — especially the collective punishment of Lebanese killed, injured or made homeless by Israel's bombings of Lebanese civilians.

“HIV/AIDS” Another Government Lie, Says Davis
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Stephen Davis John F. Kennedy wasn't killed by a lone assassin, the "Gulf of Tonkin" incident used as a pretext to escalate the Viet Nam war never happened, there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq — and HIV can't possibly be the cause of AIDS. The first three government lies in that list have already been exposed, and author, former state senator and former physician's assistant Stephen Davis is committing himself to exposing the last one. His book, "Wrongful Death: The AIDS Trial," presents the case against HIV as the cause of AIDS in the context of a courtroom-thriller novel, with 71 pages of references to document his scientific sources.
