David Cole on Why We're Losing Terror War

David Cole, law professor at Georgetown University and attorney who's represented some of the victims of the U.S.'s judicial abuses in the so-called "war on terror" before the U.S. Supreme Court, spoke at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza June 26 in an appearance sponsored by the San Diego Public Library. Cole said that the flagrant violations of due process and human rights committed by the Bush administration have not only weakened America's standing in the world community, but there have actually been more terror incidents against Americans worldwide than there were before 9/11.

Queer Democrats Endorse Whitburn for Council

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club endorsed its former president, Stephen Whitburn, for San Diego City Council in the 2008 election for the Third District seat now held by Toni Atkins. By endorsing Whitburn, the club defied the Queer establishment represented by the Gay & Lesbian Times newspaper, which had urged the club to delay the endorsement until after the first fundraising period at the end of July; and the paper's columnist, Nicole Murray Ramirez, who has personally endorsed Todd Gloria, aide to Congressmember Susan Davis, and has repeatedly urged that Whitburn and all other Queer candidates withdraw from the race to make Gloria the one and only choice for Queer and Queer-friendly voters.

Teen Producers Project Honors Local Activists

The Media Arts Center's Teen Producers' Project showed "Voices of Change," a program of four short films honoring local activists in the Latino community, at the San Diego Public Library downtown June 27. The most moving part of the evening was the appearance of Herminia Enrique, one of the activists profiled, who spoke movingly about the need to stay positive and her gratitude that young people are continuing the struggle for human dignity and equal rights.

Acknowledging the lived experience of Bisexual and Transgender people will involve rethinking many of the core assumptions behind the Lesbian/Gay movement of the past 57 years, including the scientifically and experientially indefensible idea that sexual orientation is fixed at, or shortly after, birth and cannot change thereafter.

Gracia Molina de Pick Speaks on Juárez

Veteran local activist Gracia Molina de Pick and professor Ricardo Griswold del Castillo spoke to the San Diego Humanist Association June 17 about Benito Juárez, president of Mexico from 1859 to 1872 and a leader in the struggle for indigenous rights and a modern Mexico. Juárez fought the power of the Roman Catholic Church and was instrumental in drafting Mexico's progressive 1857 constitution, which guaranteed the separation of church and state. Molina de Pick also discussed her grandfather, Andrés Molina Esquivel, who wrote the first sympathetic Spanish-language biography of Juárez and also wrote "Los Grandes Problemas Nacionales," a 1909 exposé of the corruption of Mexico's dictator, Porfirio Díaz, which helped inspire the Mexican revolution the following year.

Member of Religious Delegation Reports on Visit to Iran

Last February 13 U.S. religious leaders traveled as a delegation to Iran and met with high-ranking Iranian officials, including current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and former president Muhammad Khatami. Joe Volk, a member of this delegation, reported on the trip June 13 at the Church of the Brethren in a meeting sponsored by the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), of which Volk is national executive secretary. The meeting dealt with the prospects for avoiding a U.S. war with Iran and the Iranian government's willing to negotiate if the U.S. gives up its officially stated goal of "regime change" in Iran.

Sponsored by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Alternate Focus public-access cable-TV program on Middle Eastern issues, the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice and the San Diego chapter of the National Lawyers’ Guild, the event showcased UCSD Iranian studies professor Babak Rahimi, UCSD history professor Michael Provence, and San Diego ADC president Nasser Barghouti, all of whom built their presentations around the contrast between what our media tell us about the Middle East and what’s really going on there.
