Members of the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club voted October 25 to rate openly Lesbian judge Bonnie Dumanis acceptable in her current race for San Diego County District Attorney, the highest level of support the club can give to a non-Democrat. This reversed a decision from a previous meeting (see San Diego Queer Democrats Fail to Support a D.A. Candidate, posted October 4) at which questions had been raised about Dumanis commitment to reproductive choice and her opposition to clean needle exchange.

"Film School Confidential" Rocks!

Fifteen films by San Diego college and high-school students were shown at the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts October 19-21 as part of a program called Film School Confidential. Their technical and dramatic qualities were generally excellent, and in addition to the films themselves a seminar discussed ways of getting student and amateur films shot, finished, shown and ultimately distributed commercially.

Labor and environmental representatives held a press conference outside NASSCO shipyards Monday, October 22 to demand that San Diego-area Congressmember Susan Davis oppose the controversial fast-track bill, H.R. 3005, that would give President Bush authority to negotiate trade and investment treaties that Congress could only vote up or down, without amendments. Over 100 movers and shakers of the San Diego Queer community turned out Wednesday evening, October 17 for a reception honoring James C. Hormel, whose appointment as ambassador to Luxembourg by former President Clinton made him the U.S.'s first openly Queer ambassador. The program also honored the late Queer activist Herb King and celebrated the signing into law of California's domestic partner rights bill, AB 25.
