S.D. Peace Activists Discuss Post-9/11 “Global Turning Point”
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Over 100 San Diegans attended a six-hour “Movement-Building Workshop” sponsored by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice November 18 in Balboa Park. Much of the discussion revolved around the long-term ambitions of the Right to use the crisis atmosphere after September 11 to smash civil liberties and silence Left-wing dissent once and for all. Also discussed were racist or religiously-motivated attacks against Arab-Americans and Muslim Americans, and what the intense patriotic fervor sparked by September 11 — symbolized by U.S. flag displays — means for the future of anti-war activism in this country.

Repression Spreads Against Human Rights Workers
Enrique Dávalos (tr. by editor),
Days after the assassination on October 20 of Digna Ochoa, the internationally prominent Mexican human rights lawyer, the Human Rights Commission for Baja California received a public threat of repression. Evidently, the climate of intimidation against human rights groups in Mexico under the government of Vicente Fox has now arrived to our border region. A number of observers worry that the timing of these attacks could signify a new escalation of repression, occurring as they do while much of world public attention is focused on the US military actions in Afghanistan.
