Queer Demos Discuss Future of Boy Scouts Issue

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club discussed the future of the Boy Scouts issue at its March 28 meeting. Though the City Council voted 6-3 to renew the Boy Scouts lease of city parkland last December 4 despite their discriminatory policies against Queers and atheists, the San Diego ACLU is pressing forward with a legal challenge and Scott Peters whose vote for the lease after the clubs endorsement helped him win his Council seat earned him cries of Traitor! during the December 4 meeting is pushing the Council at least to pass a resolution opposing the Scouts discrimination.

Dale Kelly Bankhead of the San Diego County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) updated the San Diego Democratic Club on the status of the Boy Scouts' lease issue March 28. Robert Kanaski, recently appointed to head the vice unit of the San Diego Police Department, and Mark Dallezotte, the departments liaison to the Queer community, spoke to the San Diego Action Network March 29 on how the police treat Queers and other sexual minorities. Attorney Andy Zmurkiewicz, also on the panel, and Queer community members in the audience took on the police representatives and accused the department of routinely using undercover operatives to bust Gay men having sex in parks and bookstores, while never doing so against heterosexuals behaving similarly.
