As a matter of fact, if one resists the media spin and takes a closer look at what the Palestinians have been struggling for during the last two weeks--let alone the last thirty-five years--it will be revealed that the Palestinian Intifada is a very American struggle. After all, it is a struggle for national independence, civil liberties, human rights, as well as a struggle to establish an open market in an independent economy, free to market forces and free from Israeli domination.

Those regular IMC readers who have been grateful for Arundhati Roy's critiques of the U.S. imperialist campaign masquerading as a "war on terrorism" will be saddened by this story from India's Frontline magazine. It seems she was fined and sentenced to a symbolic one day in jail for daring to criticize the Indian Supreme Court. Kudos to Frontline for courageously covering the story from a perspective sympathetic to her.

Over 50 people assembled outside the San Diego Police Departments downtown headquarters April 8 to protest the six officer-involved shootings that have taken place so far this year. Victims Alejandro Jimenéz, killed with 39 shots from nine police officers outside the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital March 22; and Lázaro Sustáita, shot and severely wounded March 27, were represented by their widows. Veteran activists from the sponsoring organizations Roberto Martinez and Christian Ramirez from the American Friends Service Committee and Pablo Aceves from the Raza Rights Coalition also spoke.

San Diego County Supervisor Pam Slater received the "Friend of the Environment" Award from the San Diego chapter of the Sierra Club at their annual awards event April 5. The award is for the elected official who has done the most to protect the local environment in the previous year. The citation to Sup. Slater focused on her work protecting and extending the area covered by the County's Multiple Species Conservation Plan (MSCP).
