A dramatic videotape released by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) April 24 shows the attack on Latina community activist Yolanda Perez Fajardo by a police officer at 27th and J Streets in Sherman Heights April 21. She was grabbed from behind, tripped, pushed to the ground and held down after she attempted to intervene in a confrontation between police and a suicidal teenager. Activists Christian Ramirez of AFSC and Benjamin Prado of the Raza Rights Coalition accused the police officers of racism and classism. Those kinds of things do not happen in La Jolla or Rancho Peñasquitos, Prado said.

Since then, Ryan, his brothers wife, and many other relatives of those who died on that day formed an organization called September 11 Family Members for Peaceful Tomorrows. Responding to an alleged police assault against Chicano Park Steering Committee member Yolanda Fajardo Perez, on April 22 Latino community activists Christian Ramirez and Benjamin Prado held their fourth press conference since early March to denounce police abuses against San Diegans of color. They reviewed the incident, in which Fajardo was arrested for obstruction of justice after trying to intervene between officers in the process of making another arrest and community members hostile to their presence, and renewed calls for a meeting with police chief David Bejarano and City Councilmember Ralph Inzunza to address the issue of police violence and use of force.
