Police Chief, Community Activists to Speak at Action Network Forum May 31

San Diego police chief David Bejarano has agreed to speak to the San Diego Action Network Friday, May 31, 6:30 p.m., at the Joyce Beers Community Center on Vermont Street, north of University Avenue in Hillcrest, on allegations that San Diego police officers have used excessive force in recent encounters with Latinos and others. Bejarano will speak as part of a panel including local Latino activists Christian Ramirez of the American Friends Service Committee and Benjamin Prado of the Raza Rights Coalition, who have been seeking a face-to-face meeting with the chief for over a year on the issue of police uses of force.

Declaring that "Peace is too important to be left to the military," an international group of conscientious objectors and anti-militarists from Spain, Croatia, Macedonia, Turkey, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Britain and France, blocked the main gate of NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, for about 30 minutes. Three activists, two of whom tried to lock on to the gate in order to close it, were arrested during the action, but released about one hour later. Filmmakers Paul Espinosa and Mark Day showed Espinosas 1989 documentary Uneasy Neighbors, about migrant workers in North County, and scenes from a film in progress called Pain and Privileges in Peñasquitos about the July 5, 2000 attack on five migrants by eight teenage boys in Rancho Peñasquitos. Espinosa noted that, though Uneasy Neighbors was made in 1989, its issues of race, class and the lack of affordable housing in San Diego County were still relevant. At present Espinosa and Day are seeking funding to complete the Peñasquitos film.
