Over 200 Attend San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice Rally December 8
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Over 200 people attended San Diego’s peace march and rally in City Heights December 8, part of a nationwide mobilization against the U.S. choice to respond to the September 11 attacks by making war. The event was sponsored by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice, but unlike previous Coalition events it featured theatre, music and literary readings as well as traditional speechmaking against the war.

It’s All About Empire and Oil, Richard Becker Says
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Richard Becker, San Francisco organizer for the International Action Center (IAC), spoke in San Diego December 6 and explained that the real reason for the events of September 11 wasn’t an attack on freedom and democracy. Instead, he said, the attacks were a desperate reaction to the long-term occupation of Palestine by Israel and the 60-year involvement of the U.S. in the Middle East, particularly our support of Israel and of corrupt Arab regimes like Saudi Arabia’s and Kuwait because they’re willing to sell us cheap oil.

México en la Lucha/Mexico in Struggle 7,Un éxito en Chiapas/A success in Chiapas
George Salzman,
A U.S.-funded biopiracy project in Chiapas has been 'definitively terminated'. Popular resistance by indigenous communities, supported by international criticism, led to its cancellation when ECOSUR, the School of the Southern Frontier, discontinued its collaboration with the University of Georgia team of anthropologists. The announcement, 1.) in Spanish, is first, followed by 2.) my translation into English.

The New Islamic Empire
Gary Larrabee,
Unlike Christianity, Islam is concerned with seeking to regulate, not only man's relationship with God (through his conscience), but human relationships in society as well. Therefore, there can be not only an Islamic "church" but also Islamic law, and an Islamic state. The dual religious and social character of Islam sees itself as commissioned by God to bring its own value system to the world through the jihad.

San Diego City Council Renews Boy Scouts’ Lease in Balboa Park
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
The San Diego City Council voted 6-3 on December 4 to renew the Boy Scouts of America’s $1-per-year lease on over 18 acres of prime city parkland, despite strong opposition to the lease over the Boy Scouts’ discrimination against Queers, agnostics and atheists. Though most of the Councilmembers who supported the renewal made it clear that they disapprove of the Scouts’ anti-Queer policies, they were persuaded by strong public support for the Scouts’ programs and by the argument that the 25,000 Boy Scouts in San Diego County shouldn’t lose their campground over a quarrel between adults over values.
