The Origins of Political Correctness
John M. Ellis,
|
The author argues the superiority of Western civilization and describes the origins of the mistaken notions of political correctness and cultural relativism, which deny this superiority. Argues that the latter intellectual tendencies date back to ancient times, and are implicated in the rise of twentieth century fascism and totalitarianism (e.g., Hitlerism and Stalinism). Concludes that listening to today's proponents of these tendencies will reduce us to barbarism like that which afflicts the Third World, of which he absolves Western civilization of complicity.

Global Exchange Organizer Laughlin Reports on Afghanistan
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
|
A year ago Kristi Laughlin was just another young woman in San Francisco. Today shes the main organizer for the Afghan Victims Fund of Global Exchange. At a forum at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in San Diego August 27, she discussed her trip to Afghanistan as part of an interfaith group organized by Global Exchange. While Laughlin condemned the U.S. for attacking Afghanistan, especially for using cluster bombs with their long-range destructive capability similar to landmines, she came back cautiously hopeful that the Afghani people can build a decent future if (and its a big if) the U.S. and other Western countries come through with the aid they promised last October before the attacks.

La Riva: Why the U.S. Really Wants to Attack Iraq
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
|
International Action Center (IAC) organizer and filmmaker Gloria La Riva came to San Diego August 11 to discuss the real reasons the U.S. is threatening war against Iraq. According to La Riva, the U.S. has been committed to regime change in Iraq ever since 1958 11 years before Saddam Hussein became its president when a nationalist revolution overthrew the puppet king and nationalized Iraqs oil reserves. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 and the Gulf War in 1991, the U.S. has continually attacked Iraq with periodic bombing raids aimed at civilian infrastructure and a crippling sanctions regime that has destroyed the Iraqi economy.
