International Solidarity Movement (ISM) activist Garrick Ruiz spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest January 21 on his first-hand observations of occupied Palestine. Ruiz detailed the systematic oppression of Palestinians by the Israeli military through curfews that essentially place them under house arrest for days at a time, roadblocks and checkpoints that inhibit their freedom of movement, rapidly expanding Israeli settlements throughout occupied Palestine and a policy that any Palestinian outside where the Israelis think he or she should be can be shot on sight. Ruiz backed his report with a series of horrific photos showing striking parallels between the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the early stages of the Nazi Holocaust.
