On Saturday, March 22 at least two peace events took place outside the Federal Building in downtown San Diego: an Old Women's Project vigil in solidarity with the women of Iraq and a rally and picket sponsored by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice. In addition, members of the Peace Camp which had remained outside the Federal Building since the preceding Thursday joined in the action and spoke, and the peace drummers who had been involved in several previous actions that week added spark and intensity to the action. For months the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice had been announcing an action for 5 p.m. outside the Federal Building downtown on the day the war started. Though the Bush administration's confusing phase-in of the war made it tough to determine just when that was, the action took place Thursday afternoon and drew over 1,600 people. Here are some photos of people assembling and mounting a silent vigil in the early stages of this protest. (article 1)

A weekend peace event Saturday, March 22 downtown at the Federal Building sponsored by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice drew over 1,000 people, but the participants who supplied most of the events emotional impact and power were young activists from the peace drum groups that had formed spontaneously over the previous week and the peace camp that had remained outside the Federal Building since the Coalitions previous action March 20. The post-rally march targeted the Westin Hotel in Horton Plaza after three members of the Old Womens Project were thrown out of the Westins restaurant for wearing signs reading, We Mourn with the Women of Iraq.
