California attorney general Bill Lockyer came to speak at the Malcolm X Library in San Diego April 1, flying here from Washington, D.C. where he had attended the U.S. Supreme Courts arguments in the challenge to the University of Michigans affirmative-action admissions policy. The meeting at which he spoke was also called to organize opposition to the so-called Racial Privacy Initiative, also known as the Information Ban and CRENO (short for Classification based on Race, Ethnicity and National Origin), which is expected to be on the March 2004 ballot. But the clashing agendas of the groups involved led to an oddly unfocused event that specifically linked CRENO to affirmative action even though the speakers said that could only help it pass.
