UCSD Students Dying to Stop Genocide
Jessie Godfrey,
A speak-out and die-in focused on the current genocide in Darfur, Sudan, will be held at the UC San Diego Price Center from 11-1 pm on Wednesday, March 8.
“It is up to us to speak for the hundreds of thousands of Darfurians who go unheard every day. We need to make people realize that, even after what all of our supposed ‘leaders’ said after Rwanda, including ‘never again,’ we still let it happen again and are not doing anything about it,” says Tara Ramanathan, president of UCSD’s Students Take Action Now: Darfur. STAND is the group behind this event.

City College Students Confront Governor
Rocky Magnolia,
San Diego City College students greeted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s surprise visit to the school on Thursday, Feb. 23 with an impromptu protest which consisted of an estimated 100 attendees. “Emotions were flaring that day,” said one SDCCD student who attended the protest. “Since he’s been in office his whole agenda has been to cut public funding and to tax the poor. We’re not fooled by his this new plan he’s set up for the colleges,” said Elizabeth Muller. The Governor toured the college and announced plans to give $130 million to community colleges in economically challenged areas. Students were not informed of his intention to visit the school until the day of the tour. Once the information circulated the school, many made signs and gathered outside the classroom the Governor was in. Protesters booed and hissed when Schwarzenegger was insight.

CWD Presents The Miami Model at UCSD Friday
lotu5 for sd indymedia,
Committee for World Democracy Political/Educational Film Series
Center Hall 109 Friday, Feb 17th, 7:00PM
Cost: FREE
THE MIAMI MODEL- In November, 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida, to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). Thousands of union members, environmentalists, feminists, anarchists, students, farm workers, media activists, and human rights activists who gathered in Miami to struggle against the FTAA were brutally attacked with rubber bullets, pepper spray, electric guns and shock batons, embedded reporters and information warfare, all coordinated by the new United States Department of Homeland Security. Against Capital's model of paramilitary oppression, information warfare, and corporate rule, we offered models of grassroots resistance, creative action and solidarity.
Indymedia Oncampus volunteer Michael Cardenas will be on hand to talk about Indymedia and the filmmaking process behind the Miami Model.

We will also take live calls from activists in the streets protesting the President's speech at 619-269-4693, and we may also cover the "rebuttal" by the "opposition party", the "Democrats", exposing them as the collaborators they are. We'll do this from 6pm-8pm (-ish)

Blacklisted Professors: Back to the Future?
Scott Boehm,
Calling for "fair and balanced" universities, McCarthy-like tactics are being used on campuses to wipe out free speech and debate, as well as to rollback the gains of the Civil Rights movement. UCLA is the latest site of battles over academic freedom, in which conservatives have co-opted the term to mask their real desire--a time machine that will transport society back to an idealized 1950s that never existed.

Students Being Paid to Monitor Professors
Indymedia onCampus,
We received this via email today: As you may have already heard, Rob Watson, Rafael Perez-Torres and I are currently listed on the website of UCLAprofs.com, a venture of the Bruin Alumni Association, on whose board serve, among others, CA State Senator Bill Morrow (of San Diego, who introduced SB5, the so-called student bill of rights, into the CA Senate) and our erstwhile colleague Leila Beckwith. Rob and Rafael will have to check for themselves, of course, but my "dossier" at this organization includes utterly false, misleading, distorted as well as libelous claims (e.g., that I am a "vicious anti-Semite.").
The organization actively encourages UCLA students to spy on the currently blacklisted faculty, as well as on a separate list of "targeted faculty" which includes Arthur Little, Stephen Yenser and Jonathan Post. They offer, for example, cash for recordings of class lectures, lecture notes, etc. See below.
I'm writing to see if there's anything that can be done to protect
what remains of academic freedom at our university.

Over 100 Students Stage Die-In for Darfur
lotu5 for indymedia oncampus,
UPDATE 1:39PM: Regents vote yes to create a committee to consider divestment
Over 100 UCSD and UCLA students staged a die-in today at the Price Center, a central area for campus traffic, to urge the UC Regents to divest from Darfur. The UC Regents are meeting at UCSD today to decide on whether or not to divest from Darfur. A race-based genocide is going on in Darfur, and over 400,000 have died as a result. As students and a TV crew looked on, the students held signs about divestment from Darfur and one person spoke about why they were holding the die-in. The regents meeting will be taking place today from 10:30am to 2pm at UCSD and students will be attending the meeting.

Support the UC in Stopping Genocide - In response to conflict with Darfurian rebel groups in February 2003, the Sudanese government, working with Arab militias called "janjaweed", began sponsoring wholesale ethnic cleansing of black Darfurians, almost all of whom had NO affiliation with the rebel groups.
