Demo to Save Kenneth Foster August 27
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
On Monday, August 27, at 5 p.m. on Broadway in front of Horton Plaza between Third and Fourth Streets downtown, there will be a demonstration to save Texas death-row inmate Kenneth Foster from being executed on August 30 and win him a new trial. This article details the Foster case and exposes the major miscarriages of justice that led to Foster's conviction and death sentence for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It also quotes from Foster himself and mentions his organization D.R.I.V.E. (Death Row Inter-communalist Vanguard Engagement), a group of death row prisoners campaigning both for improved conditions and for an end to capital punishment itself. For more information, please see Foster's Web site at www.freekenneth.com

Stay Home Wins in Oaxaca Election, PRI Retains Power
compiled by san diego indymedia volunteer,
In Sunday elections in Oaxaca, close to 80% of the electorate elected not to vote, meaning that the candidates of PRI (the party of murderous dictator Ulises Ruiz, which has long held power) won all open offices. The overwhelming lack of participation was somewhat unexpected, given APPO's (Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca) call for a punishment vote against the ruling party.
from South Notes: Although the preliminary results are still being tallied, it’s already apparent that the big winner in today’s legislative elections is “none of the above”. At just after midnight local time, the State Electoral Institute showed that 75% of the electorate chose not to vote today. [Note: That number may change as more ballots are tallied.] --Read More--
from Barucha Calamity Peller: Last night, while the votes were being counted that confirmed a PRI sweep of the state legistlative elections, three people were taken off the streets of the Zocalo in Oaxaca City by police at approximately 10 pm. Among them were two Catalans and one Mexican woman...[the detainees apparently have been accounted for] The elections, in which almost 80% of the Oaxacan population abstained from voting, came as a dissapointment for the APPO’s “punishment vote” campaign against the PRI.--Read More--
Background: from Barucha Calamity Peller: Has the world forgotten about Oaxaca? Political activity, from repression to organizing, is still just as present as when the Oaxaca uprising was visible in the streets, but with the appearance of normalcy in Oaxaca City it seems that many of us have begun the process of forgetting or assuming that the Oaxaca struggle is over. --Read More--

Human Rights Activists Protest Police Violence in Oaxaca
san diego indymedia volunteer,
On Monday, human rights activists responded to brutality in Oaxaca against a people's celebration of Guelaguetza, a traditional festival, by educating and protesting at the Mexican Consulate in San Diego.
On July 16, state and federal forces in Oaxaca City attacked members of APPO (Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca), people participating in the popular celebration and journalists, leaving at least one dead, numerous injuries and over 60 detained or disappeared (en1, en2; es1, es2). The popular Guelaguetza was an alternative to the government-supported celebration, co-opted from the traditional holiday by commercial tourist interests.
Activists from vAPPOroaxaca and The Indigenous Binational Front (FIOB) began early in the morning by informing the folks standing in line to get into the consulate about the situation in Oaxaca and by playing videos (vid1, vid2) from the July 16 attack on a laptop. After the Consul arrived mid-morning in his fancy car and expressed his displeasure by staring and making faces at the protesters, they began chanting and loudly demanding freedom for political prisoners and the removal of the corrupt governor of Oaxaca, Ulises Ruiz.
APPO formed last summer shortly after school teachers repelled an attack by state forces on their occupation of the zócalo (central plaza) of Oaxaca City and effectively governed the city for several months until an invasion by Federal Preventative Police, prompted by the murders of Oaxaqueños Esteban Zurrita and Emilio Alonso Fabian and Indymedia journalist Brad Will by government-sponsored paramilitaries, on October 27. San Diego activists set up a camp and continuously occupied the sidewalk outside of the Mexican Consulate from October 29 to November 21, using it as a base for protests, marches and rallies in solidarity with the People of Oaxaca.

Femicides in Guatemala
.,
As femicides continue in Juarez, Iraq and elsewhere, and corporate media ignores them, further reports of the pervasive nature of atrocities against women continue to accumulate. A report on femicides in Guatemala by Parenti and Munoz:
"While these murders may seem like little more than random thrill killings to some observers, in fact they serve a function of social control much as would any form of state terrorism. The violence perpetrated against individuals creates a pervasive climate of fear and horror within the victimized families and communities, thereby discouraging social protest and popular resistance. Instead of organizing around any number of crucial politico-economic issues, many of the demoralized and traumatized families cower in stunned silence." (Parenti and Munoz)

David Cole on Why We're Losing Terror War
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
David Cole, law professor at Georgetown University and attorney who's represented some of the victims of the U.S.'s judicial abuses in the so-called "war on terror" before the U.S. Supreme Court, spoke at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza June 26 in an appearance sponsored by the San Diego Public Library. Cole said that the flagrant violations of due process and human rights committed by the Bush administration have not only weakened America's standing in the world community, but there have actually been more terror incidents against Americans worldwide than there were before 9/11.

Oaxaca - CIPO attacked, six killed, several detained. Help requested. » Intercontinental Cry
I just received this a few minutes ago, it’s a communique from one of the CIPO (Consejo Indigena Popular de Oaxaca) communities in Oaxaca asking for urgent support. Emails you can write to follow.
Indigenous Visitor to (Six Nations) Reclamation site sought by Mexican Authorities
On Sunday June 17 their community was attacked by another community supported by paramilitaries. Up to now six people have been killed and several others detained.
There is a protest in the region over clear cutting the Yyusuni forest. The community of San Isidro wants to prevent the erosion of the forest and preserve the water for irrigation. They were peacefully protesting the clear cutting of the trees when they were viciously attacked by the paramilitaries and the Municipal government. In addition to the six people killed, others have been detained and tortured.

ICE Raid in Vista
Tina Jillings - repost from e-mail,
From Tina Jillings: June 21, 2007. This morning I witnessed for the first time an ICE raid. It happened right here in Townsite. I must be honest and say that I have never seen anything like this except on television and watching this activity unfold live I must admit it is traumatizing. One can only imagine what the families are going through because of this horrible experience.
This morning I witnessed a mother and father being taken from their home while their children stood by and watched. The children ranging from ages 9 to 1 years old witnessed the entire arrest and were horrified by the events. I do not know if they understood that their lives would never be same. They watched helplessly as their little worlds were falling apart right in front of their face. The two oldest were crying hysterically, as far as the two younger ones go, one was in total shock and unable to speak until about 45 minutes, and the baby was clutching onto his Aunt.
After their parents were gone they began to sob and cry for their mama y papi. The oldest child (Cristal, 9,) gave me a description of what happened inside the home while we were waiting outside. She said that early in the morning someone was pounding on their door. "They screamed to open the door or they will knock it down". She said that they hid under the bed because they were afraid, because this type of thing never happened before. She said her father answered the door and that the men began to scream at him "get down on the floor or they will shoot him. " They all came out of their hiding places because the "Police/ICE guys were going throughout the house with guns and rifles drawn. They began to question all of them and eventually they took her Mom and Dad away. Their Aunt was called to collect the four children. I obtained information from the Aunt and videotaped the aftermath of this operation.
The separation of families must stop! These atrocities will not stop until we unite, and with one voice make it clear that we demand the passing of compassionate, fair, humane immigration reform! These children are American citizens and their basic right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness has been violated. These abuses must stop now! The time to act is now!

Murder of Noe Rojas Approved by SD DA

Police cleared in slaying of teen who had toy gun
SAN DIEGO: Two San Diego police officers who fatally shot a teenager who had a toy gun were justified in their actions, the district attorney has ruled.
In a letter sent to Police Chief William Lansdowne and dated Friday, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said the shooting death of Noe Rojas-Godinez, 17, on Feb. 10 was legally justified.
Officers Jack Pearson and Paul Galante, assigned to the Southeastern Division, will face no criminal liability for their actions, Dumanis said.
The shooting occurred in Emerald Hills, near Pyramid and Kenwood streets, about 10:50 p.m. The officers tried to pull over a Jeep Cherokee, but the driver, Rojas-Godinez, ran a stop sign and drove away, authorities said.
The teen pulled into a driveway on Bollenbacher Street, and as the officers approached the sport utility vehicle, Galante saw what appeared to be a handgun on the passenger seat and warned his partner, Dumanis' letter said.
Rojas-Godinez then shifted the SUV into reverse and crashed it into the police car, authorities said. The SUV then moved forward, and the officers opened fire. Galante fired 15 rounds and Pearson fired three, the letter said.
The district attorney's letter said the gun on the seat turned out to be a blue-plastic toy with a red tip.
Statements from residents who heard what happened support the officers' accounts, officials said.
Toxicology tests showed that Rojas-Godinez, a Mexican native, was under the influence of methamphetamine when he died. –A.M.

LAS COLINAS REGENTRIFICATION?
Janice Jordan,
For years prison rights activists have been attempting to expose medical neglect and abuse in California's prisons and jails to the general public and mainstream media. Epidemics of HIV/AIDS, HEP C and Tuberculosis plague our sisters and brothers that live behind bars. The sad fact is that most of these individuals are poor. The majority are people of color. Many are without families. People with power and privilege don't care or don't believe it's their problem when in fact these epidemics wouldn't exist, if appropriate treatment and adequately trained staff were employed at the state's prisons and county jails.
A San Diego Grand Jury report calls for replacing the Las Colinas Women's Detention Facility. Replacing a building will not end the mental, medical and physical abuse female inmates sustain at the hands of Sheriff Department employees.--Read More--
Comment from s t a r r: ...As Angela Davis describes, the Prison Industrial Complex denies the humanity of those locked up - over 2 Million people in the U.S. This is a shameful statistic for a nation that touts itself as the most civilized in the world. This also increases the number of families with someone locked up, on parole, or on probation. This typifies a police state. Las Colinas is local. In the face of trends to test kids out of school and gentrify them out of jobs, how does one bring down the prison industrial complex? LOCALLY...

Police Brutality Film Screening and Community Discussion
san diego indymedia volunteer,
Over seventeen people have been murdered by cops in san diego county during the past two years (1 | 2). Cops in san diego facilitate, protect and partner with violent fascists who harass, threaten and assault immigrants, day laborers and human rights activists (1 | 2 | 3) and the hunt for migrants at the border causes hundreds of needless deaths annually (1 | 2). Countless people who aren't carrying shopping bags, who don't live or work in the right neighborhoods, who don't have the right skin color, religious practices, clothing, haircut or gender expression, who don't speak the right language, or who don't show the proper deference towards authority figures are profiled, hassled, detained, beaten, arrested, deported, pepper-sprayed, tasered or shot. Homeless people, often those in need of medical attention, are mistreated and arrested (1 | 2 | 3). Cops approach these people as subhumans undeserving of humane treatment (for example: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4).
The Portland, Oregon region has experienced a similar epidemic of police brutality, which has been extensively documented by Portland Indymedia. On Sept 6, 2005 Fouad Kaady was in a serious car accident outside of Portland, and was sitting by the side of the road naked, burned, bloody and in a catatonic state. Two cops arrived and, instead of providing medical aid, tasered, shot and killed him in less than 28 seconds. The corporate media immediately tried to smear Kaady and the DA ruled the shooting justified. Portland Indymedia obtained the taped interviews of the cops and filmmaker Cat used the cops' own words to reconstruct the murder, resulting in "28 Seconds: The Killing of Fouad Kaady."
Please join San Diego Indymedia and the Sagon Penn Chapter of Copwatch for a film screening and community discussion about police brutality in san diego and the role independent media can play in combating it.

The 6th @ Penn Theatre, 3704 Sixth Avenue in Hillcrest, is currently mounting a festival called "Resilience of the Spirit," showcasing plays dealing with human rights. A brilliant double bill called "The Last Class," in which a retiring classics professor gives a final lecture that spills over into shocking revelations about her private life, and "A Hundred Birds," in which victims of a child molester reunite as adults and kidnap their victimizer, alternates with "Lemkin's House," a fantasy in which Raphael Lemkin — a Polish Jew who fled his country when the Nazis conquered it and later coined the term "genocide" in his analysis of Nazi occupation — survives his actual death in 1959 and responds to more recent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.
