Remember the Hunger Strikers: Continue the Fight for Freedom
Janice Jordan - Peace and Feedom Party Candidate for Governor,
I returned last week from an eight day trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Every year the month of August in Belfast is filled with street festivals in many of the city's communities. This year is especially active, because 2006 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Ten Irishmen who gave their lives in the name of Irish freedom! The history of Irish liberation is a part of every day life. Support for the people of Palestine and Lebanon was visible in the pubs, on the streets and in the music halls. Recognizing and acting on the struggles of occupied and oppressed people around the world is something the Irish do without effort.

SANTIAGUITO PRISONERS DENOUNCE ATTACK BY GUARDS
Resistencia, Radio Pacheco,
This letter from political prisoners arrested at Atenco and held at Santiaguito prison tells of a recent attack on a compañero by a guard. It is followed by an urgent appeal for solidarity from compañeros who are maintaining an ongoing sit-in outside the prison.
WE DEMAND: 1. the immediate presence of human rights organizations and collectives that can enter the prison, press charges, and physically evaluate our compañero. 2. that the prison guards not leave until our compañero has identified the guard in question and pressed charges against him for violating the protective order, a judicial resolution. 3. the immediate resignation of the prison Warden and the Chief of Internal Security due to the fact that they have permitted the aggression and covered it up. 4. that the General Director of Prisons of the State of Mexico resolve this problem because it is beyond the scope of the Warden of this prison, given that he is protecting the guard and probably ordered the aggression. Children Who Are Forbidden To Cry
kirsten anderberg,
Beating kids stops crying. What a statement, eh? You would think beating children would make them cry. But if the beatings are severe enough, they make children NOT cry. We see this in concentration camps, in war, in child protection institutions and foster care...I would assume that mental state of *not crying when in fear* is called “trauma.”

San Diegans Protest Queer Executions in Iran
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
About 10 San Diegans participated in a demonstration held July 19 as part of an international commemoration of the first anniversary of the execution of two 17-year-old Queer boys in Iran. Though some Leftists questioned the timing of a protest targeting Iran just when the U.S. is threatening an imperalist attack against the country, participants said that they felt a need to make a statement that the executions were wrong and in any case it was highly unlikely that President Bush would use Queer rights as a pretext to attack Iran when he is so adamantly opposed to Queer rights in the U.S.

Tijuana Report On the Edge: Juarez Femicides
Yolanda,
Between 70 and 80 people were in attendance at the Teatro de la Casa de la Cultura in Tijuana for Steev Hise's film On the Edge: The Femicides in Ciudad Juarez.
Lourdes Diaz, Director of Tijuana’s Women’s Municipal Institute gave the introduction. After the film about 80% of the audience stayed for over an hour of discussion with Steev Hise and Mrs. Sara Ruiz, moderated by Carmen Valadez of the Feminist Binational Collective.
Mrs. Ruiz’s daughter Sarita was abducted, assaulted and thrown from a moving car last December on to the streets of Tijuana by Pueblo Amigo, about four blocks away from the San Ysidro Port of Entry. She died six days later. Mrs. Ruiz carried out a 9-day hunger strike in June and says many mothers whose daughters have been victimized are afraid to speak out and have asked her to carry on for them also.
Majority awareness and actions are needed to halt and stop the spread of out-of-control atrocities. As evidenced by the reception of the screenings in San Diego and Tijuana this last week, On the Edge is an important step in this direction.

Juarez Femicides Film Screening
queer-j brad,
For more than a decade, the cities of Chihuahua and Juarez, near the US-Mexico border, have been killing fields for young women, the site of over 400 unsolved femicides. Despite the horrific nature of these crimes, authorities at all levels exhibit indifference, and there is strong evidence that some officials may be involved. Impunity and corruption has permitted the criminals, whoever they are, to continue committing these acts, knowing there will be no consequences.
A significant number of victims work in the maquiladora sector - sweatshops that produce for export with 90% destined for the United States. Despite the crime wave, they offer almost no protection for their workers.
Small advances in the struggle for justice are due to the perseverance of victims' families who cannot be silenced despite the efforts of state and federal authorities to keep them quiet. Often grassroots groups work in a climate of threats and defamation by government officials for making one simple demand - STOP THE FEMICIDE!
On Wednesday, 26 July, SDIMC, in collaboration with the Young Adult Mystery Squad and Voz Alta, showed two documentaries concerning the situation in Juarez at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Hillcrest: On the Edge, by Steev Hise, and The Mothers of Juarez, by Zulma Aguiar. Steev Hise introduced the films and answered questions following the films. Audio Duration: 1min 50sec, 1min and 27min 50sec.

DA Dumanis Lies About Law
Fred Gardner, repost from counterpunch,
Raids on July 6 targeted 11 San Diego cannabis dispensaries. Owners of some of the dispensaries not raided that day were heard to say that they were spared because they were running proper establishments. As if the DEA made such distinctions! On July 21 the remaining clubs were visited by law enforcement and told to close or else. They have all complied.
San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis is taking the position that all sales of marijuana are illegal -despite several court rulings to the contrary and the wording of the Health & Safety Code as modified by Senate Bill 420 and the appellate court ruling in People v. Urziceanu.

From Manila IMC: Killing Season in the Philippines
Herbert Docena (Focus on Global South) repost,
MANILA - Political activist Cathy Alcantara was gunned down by unidentified assailants last December 5, outside the resort where she had helped to organize a conference on farmers' rights.
Two months later, the lifeless body of her activist friend, 19-year-old Audie Lucero, was found in a remote rice field. Lucero was last seen surrounded by police officers and soldiers in a hospital lobby, inexplicably crying.
Annaliza Abanador-Gandia, another left-leaning activist, had frequently marched with the two victims, often at the forefront of demonstrations calling for various sorts of political change, including the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, an end to US military exercises in the Philippines, and overhaul of the World Trade Organization's free-trade policies.
On May 18, it was Abanador-Gandia's turn to die. It's unclear exactly what happened, because she was alone inside her shop that night. Her body was found slumped on a table, eight bullets through her face, chest and stomach. The gunpowder found on her face indicated that she had been shot at point-blank range.

Cop Crackdown On the Eve of G8 in Russia
repost from email,
Russia is on the verge of the G8 summit which is to be hosted in Saint Petersburg.
The activists belonging to different political and grass root organizations and groups scattered all over Russia are coming to Saint Petersburg to participate in the alternative "summit". These persons are being harassed and persecuted by the local police and security services agents on their way to Saint Petersburg.
Up to this date at least 100 people have been detained under various pretexts having no legal force. People are forcefully deprived of their documents, transportation tickets, stalked by unknown individuals and then once again arrested by police on the pretext of protecting their personal safety (!). On different occasions people have brutally been mishandled by police and secret service agents.
We are appealing to all people in the Western countries and asking them to voice their solidarity with the Russian political and social activists at this critical moment on the eve of the G-8 summit. We suggest that you picket the Russian embassies and consulates.
For more info about anti-g8 actions in russia, see
http://int.ru.indymedia.org/
UPDATE:
Despite the fact that as many as 200 potential anti-G8 protesters have been already arrested just before the arrival of Bush in Russia, activists yesterday successfully organised a large carnival protest in Moscow without a single person being detained. "Russian citizens desperately need international help. The government, police and the justice system are only oppressing popular dissent. We urge people to put pressure on the Russian embassy wherever they live." The police have today cancelled the one previously permitted demonstration against the G8, making all public dissent now officially illegal.

DEA Raids SD Medical Marijuana Dispensaries
repost from Americans for Safe Acess,
On Thurday, federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) raided as many as 13 San Diego-area medical marijuana dispensaries and arrested at least two of the dispensary operators.
“The DEA continues to waste valuable resources on attacking medical marijuana patients,” said Steph Sherer, executive director of Americans for Safe Access, the leading national medical marijuana advocacy group. “The vast majority of Americans believe the sick and suffering should have legal access to marijuana if they are helped by it.”

Immigration Sweep Brings Fear to Community
repost from AP,
Fewer parents are walking their children to school in this border city's Linda Vista neighborhood. The crowd of day laborers huddled in a parking lot outside McDonald's has dropped by half.
A sense of unease has spread in this community of weather-worn homes since
immigration agents began walking the streets as part of a stepped-up nationwide effort targeting an estimated 590,000 immigrant fugitives. Other illegal immigrants are being rounded up along the way.

Irish Prison Protest Begins
NIFC - National Irish Freedom Committee,
On Monday 19th June Republican Prisoners Of War (POW's) began a protest action in Maghaberry, this is the first in a series of protests planned by Republican POW’s in the gaol. POW’s are making clear that they will not accept the sub standard conditions on the segregated wing, they will not be criminalised nor will they be intimidated or coerced by the petty restrictions being imposed by prison screws to make the day to day life in the gaol for POW’s more difficult.

Support Josh,
Support and Witnesses Needed for Arrested Immigrants Rights Activist!
On June 3rd, Immigrant Rights Activists held a rally in San Ysidro, CA to protest the militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border and the oppressive, racist Hagel-Martinez bill. A small group of racist vigilantes from the Minutemen Project were confronted in a vocal, but very peaceful manner. During this confrontation the police assaulted and arrested Josh, a pro-immigrant rights activist, claiming that he had thrown a punch at an officer.
Josh is no longer in custody but is facing legal charges. The charge that a punch was thrown at an officer is an outright fabrication. We are calling on all who were present at the event and witnessed the arrest or any other incidents of police brutality to contact the support committee at standuptopower@yahoo.com

Bush, NSA Kill Democracy
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The revelation that since shortly after 9/11 the federal government has received records of virtually every phone call made in the U.S. is a shocker even by the increasingly jaded standards of the "war on terror" era. There are a number of salient points to make about this program: 1) It is patently illegal on its face. 2) It is a symptom of the Bush administration’s visceral contempt for civil liberties, the right of privacy, judicial due process and anything else that would stand in the way of Bush’s radical-Right blueprint to turn the Presidency into a dictatorship. 3) Bush and the members of his administration have systematically lied to the American people about the extent of their spying on them and sought to punish the journalists who have brought these stories to light. 4) The majority of the American people have become so traumatized by 9/11 and the fear-mongering of this administration that they will go along with this latest offense against their liberties.
