Troops Out Now! Build a United Front!
Workers World,
The criminal occupation/war in Iraq must be stopped. Each day it continues, more Iraqis die; more Iraqi cities and towns suffer raids, cordons, abuses and every form of brutality from the occupiers and their puppet troops.

Breaking Border Paradigms
Bob Alba w/sdimc,
Calexico had many successes Saturday and early Sunday morning. According to the public and most major news sources, the human rights protestors have effectively shut down or delayed the Friends of the Border Patrol (FBP) from inaugurating their fall vigilante watch. Here are some pictures from one of the insipiring parts of the day as we broke down Border paradigms.

Grand Jury Grinds On
lotu5,
After over 40 days in jail for refusing to cooperate with an investigation into a public forum, San Diego activists are now, and will continue to stand by their beliefs. They need your support in the form of letters, donations and books more than ever.
The following statement from David Agranoff was recently posted to San Diego Indymedia: In the wake of Recent Events I wanted to issue a statement for all of MY SUPPORTERS here in SAN DIEGO, Nationally and Yes WORLDWIDE. Many of you have sent wonderful letters, money and books. Locally you have carried signs and SHOWN UP faithfully to court dates and fundraisers. I can honestly say that it TOUCHES ME DEEPLY.
Since our Dago Activist Community came under attack there have been ups and downs in terms of betrayals and solidarity. MOST of you have stood strong to resist this GRAND JURY REPRESSION. At this point I have already SPENT 40 DAYS IN PRISON TO DEFEND the ACTIVIST COMMUNITY. Some of you were at Rod's Lecture or maybe just friends were there. I am doing OK living in this PRISON the system CAN NOT break me.
ALL I ASK, you don't have to protest, you don't have to write a letter, ALL I ASK is you READ this essay from beginning to end. I am not asking for much. [Complete Call for Solidarity]

A Call For Solidarity
David Agranoff,
David mailed me this statement asking for solidarity and asked that I post it on IndyMedia. There are only a few spelling errors/typos in David's letter because he had to write this in a bit of a hurry, but I will try to make them coherent while keeping as much of David's writing in it's original form as possible. Hopefully I don't add my own typos as I type this out.

Troops begin COMBAT OPERATIONS in New Orleans
ArmyTimes.com,
“This place is going to look like Little Somalia,” Brig. Gen. Gary Jones, commander of the Louisiana National Guard’s Joint Task Force told Army Times Friday as hundreds of armed troops under his charge prepared to launch a massive citywide security mission from a staging area outside the Louisiana Superdome. “We’re going to go out and take this city back. This will be a combat operation to get this city under control.”

The Big Disconnect: views on New Orleans
CNN c/o lotu5,
# FEMA Chief Brown: Considering the dire circumstances that we have in New Orleans, virtually a city that has been destroyed, things are going relatively well.
# Homeland Security Director Chertoff: Now, of course, a critical element of what we're doing is the process of evacuation and securing New Orleans and other areas that are afflicted. And here the Department of Defense has performed magnificently, as has the National Guard, in bringing enormous resources and capabilities to bear in the areas that are suffering.
# Crowd chanting outside the Convention Center: We want help.
# Mayor Nagin: They don't have a clue what's going on down there.
# Phyllis Petrich, a tourist stranded at the Ritz-Carlton: They are invisible. We have no idea where they are. We hear bits and pieces that the National Guard is around, but where? We have not seen them. We have not seen FEMA officials. We have seen no one.

This is only part of a large movement against the MinuteMen, La Migra and the Border itself. Thursday night before the conference, La Raza Rights Coalition held a community forum to present their demands around these issues to legislators. Next weekend, Sept 2-4, BorderHack 2005 will be taking place in Tijuana. Also that weekend, on the 3rd, is a forum against the Minutemen in Chula Vista.
The Encuentro was planned as a space to strategize about how to create a world without borders, how to effectively challenge racism and how to put an end to the Minuteman Project. These strategies will be put into action from September 16-18th in a series of actions and a No Border Camp in Calexico.

On Monday, Janet Napolitano, the Democratic governor of Arizona, declared a similar emergency in her state. The California legislature is debating a similar declaration. Usually associated with disasters such as floods and earthquakes, these state of emergency declarations are being issued to get 3.25 million dollars in federal funds to increase the militarized policing of the US-Mexico border.

Anti-Immigration Forum Protested – Riot Police Add Tension
sdimc volunteer,
On Thursday, August 11, 2005 protesters and anti-immigrant activists turned out to a forum. The big names (James Gilchrist and Rep. Tom Tancredo) and potential conflict brought out media and the riot police. Although the corporate media downplays events when no outright mayhem ensues, there is a lot that can be learned from this event.
This summer has seen increasingly bold shows at anti-immigrant demonstrations. The violence against immigrants has increased with gun carrying minutemen patrolling the border. Now the leaders of this anti-immigrant movement are bringing their message of hate into our communities to breed fear and distrust among naive conservatives. If you think that this is just your everyday "freedom of speech" issue look at the police presence - 150 cops in riot gear!? When has anything in Carlsbad ever had riot police? Photos - Seeds of Hatred- photos from Carlsbad Articles - Opposition Grows, Police Defend Racist Forum, RACIST HATE SPEECH in Carlsbad, Minutemen Sick Cops on Residents in Carlsbad Commentary - How to talk to a Minuteperson

Pack The Courthouse Tomorrow to Free David and Danae!
freespeechdefense,
Instead of holding our standard demo on Tuesday, a support rally will be held at the Federal Building (880 Front Street & Broadway) for David and Danae this Thursday at 2:30pm. A press conference will be held at 3:00pm. Please arrive on time! We are asking people to pack the courtroom for their hearing immediately following the rally and press conference. Please bring signs, noisemakers and friends for the rally!
On Tuesday, July 12th, David Agranoff and Danae Kelley were arrested for civil contempt for refusing to cooperate with the grand jury. Of all eight people known to have appeared before the grand jury, only these two refused to testify on the grounds of First Amendment objections. This Thursday, Judge Irma Gonzalez has agreed to hear a motion brought by their attorneys to release them. David and Danae can only be kept in prison as long as their imprisonment is believed to serve coercive and not punitive purposes. As soon as Judge Gonzalez believes that no amount of time in prison will coerce them into testifying, by law she must release them. David and Danae will be presenting that argument in court on Thursday.

“Guantánamo” Play Dramatizes Rights Abuses
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The British play "Guantánamo: 'Honor Bound to Defend Freedom'" was presented in a staged reading at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church July 12. Drawn exclusively from testimony from Guantánamo detainees and public statements by defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other officials, the play brings a human dimension to the allegations of torture and abuse of the Guantánamo prisoners by the U.S. military. After the play, local attorney and law professor Marjorie Cohn led a discussion which touched on recent allegations in the "New Yorker" that the abuses at Guantánamo are part of a deliberate psychological strategy to wear down the prisoners and get them to talk.
