Great Political Plays at 6th @ Penn
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
6th @ Penn Theatre, 3704 Sixth Avenue in Hillcrest, is presenting on its so-called "off nights" (Sundays through Wednesdays) through November 16 an intense, profoundly moving program of plays united by the theme of inhumanity. The subjects of the plays include the genocides in Rwanda and Sudan, lingering anti-Jewish prejudice in America and the U.S. practice of "extraordinary rendition" — kidnapping terror suspects and flying them to countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt so they can be tortured. Their styles range from wrenching, realistic drama to circus-like satirical farce, but all four works combine a sense of political commitment with a passionate, artistically integral sense of drama.

October 22, 2005 - No More Police Brutality!
sdimc ,
From Police Shootings that result in death to grand jury investigations, San Diego's police state is out of control. Yesterday's Conference was attended by almost 100 people and addressed these tough issues. For nine days, Cherry Mason frantically looked for her daughter who was five months pregnant. Finally, she was notified her daughter had been shot and killed by a border agent who was participating illegally in a drug bust in a black neighborhood. She later discovered that her child; handcuffed, lying face down in the mud, had been shot in the back. [Complete Story: Angry Mothers Address CopWatch Conference]

A Warning ?
Ben,
Where would we really find the principal danger to civil liberty in a republic? Not in the governors as governors, not in the governed as governed, but in the governed unequipped to function as governors. The chief enemies of republican freedom are mental sloth, conformity, bigotry, superstition, credulity, monopoly in the market of ideas, and utter, benighted ignorance. Footnote 1 to ADDERLEY v. FLORIDA, 385 U.S. 39 (1966), JUSTICE DOUGLAS, with whom THE CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE BRENNAN, and MR. JUSTICE FORTAS concur, dissenting.

Anti-Fascist Action Around the Country
repost from Chicago IMC, Columbus IMC by sd indymedia,
A plan by Neo-Nazis to march through a neighborhood in northen Toledo Saturday October 15, incited a riot. The ISO (international socialist organziaton), ARA (anti-racist action) and various members of the community came to counter-demonstrate against the Nazi's which were comprised of members from the NSM (national socialist movement) and National Alliance. When the protesters arrived there were only about 8 nazis including Bill White spokesperson of the NSM. When police tried to escort the nazis out in the neighborhood they were pelted by rocks and a crowd of up to 600 residents gathered in protest. Tear gas was used to push back people but the police were unable to control the crowd as they were hit by rocks when they would try to advance. The police were overwhelmed as the crowd surged forward and forced the nazis to retreat to their cars and leave the city. Activist's Home raided, family handcuffed
repost from sd city beat,
As someone who's had their home raided and who's been following these stories closely, i know that John Parmley is a complete fucking liar. He says that this kind of handcuffing is routine, but this is the first San Diego raid in which this has been done. This is plainly an intense form of harassment and violation of people's rights by the FBI.

"The War Within" Explores a Terrorist's Mind
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
"The War Within," a new film opening October 7 at the Landmark Cinemas in Hillcrest, is a powerful, gripping drama about a would-be terrorist planning an attack in New York after three years being imprisoned and tortured in his native Pakistan. The film maintains a delicate balance, seeking to make us understand the central character's motives without making him so sympathetic as to condone his actions. The film's effectiveness is due to the skill of its creators — director Joseph Castelo and star Ayad Akhtar, who also co-wrote the script — in maintaining that balance and creating enough other characters to dramatize the central character's "roads not taken" and leave open the hope that he'll abandon his terrorist plans.

Prison Boom a Product of Racism, Matlin Says
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
The United States, home to six percent of the world’s population, contains 25 percent of the world’s prisoners, David Matlin, literature professor at San Diego State University and former teacher in New York state prisons, told an audience of about 60 at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest September 16. Drawing part of his talk from his book, "Prisons: Inside the New America," Matlin combined shocking statistics about the sheer reach of America’s burgeoning prison system with reflections about what the high rate of incarceration means to us as a society and to our values.
