An angry letter from New Orleans

On September 1 the WSWS posted a letter from a New Orleans hospital, forwarded to us by Karen O'Keefe, a Washington, DC-based lawyer. Yesterday, I wrote to you to let you know that my friends were stranded with many, many others in a hospital. Thank you for posting it. I am so relieved to report that they are out of New Orleans now. But, many, many others (including at least one of my good friends) are still stranded there—with little or no water, medications, food, security, and other essentials. The relief response—as we all know—has been scandalously little and late. Now, on top of the disgraceful federal response, the feds are actually preventing individuals from providing desperately needed help. Here is the email I received:

9/4 3:52PM CDT: Unmarked police vehicles (cadillacs) are driving through the neighborhood with SWAT team police armed with 'big black machine guns' telling people through bullhorns they are under orders to evacuate and must leave the city now. He reports helicopters all over the place of all kinds - everything from large Army helicopters with guns to Red Cross helicopters - they are swooping down low in the neighborhood and 'buzzing' houses - he said one just flew low enough over him to blow shingles off the roof. He is starting to see National Guardsmen marching through the streets with guns to make sure people obey evacuation orders.

I was seriously hoping that I would not have to write this article. But it has been too long now, and I have to say something. Regardless of whether the deaths en masse of poor black folks in New Orleans is due to neglect or maliciousness, the end result is constructively a genocide on poor blacks in America, right now, in 2005. The lack of aid to New Orleans at this late hour (7 pm, Sept. 1) is not explicable. I have only one explanation that I can muster up. And that explanation is classism and racism.

An Encuentro Against All Borders

The No Border Encuentro took place on August 27-28th at the Sherman Heights Community Center in San Diego/Aztlan. Two days of events including a maquiladora tour, a benefit concert and a day of forums, panels and encounters took place with over 100 people from San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Orange County, Eugene, Portland, Tijuana, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia participating. On the walls hung photos of recent actions to stop the Minutemen, a poster of the PGA Hallmarks, and maps of Calexico, where the No Border Camp will be in September. Radio coverage was done all weekend by Blast Furnace Radio, due to some technical difficultues at radioActive sanDiego.

This is only part of a large movement against the MinuteMen, La Migra and the Border itself. Thursday night before the conference, La Raza Rights Coalition held a community forum to present their demands around these issues to legislators. Next weekend, Sept 2-4, BorderHack 2005 will be taking place in Tijuana. Also that weekend, on the 3rd, is a forum against the Minutemen in Chula Vista.

The Encuentro was planned as a space to strategize about how to create a world without borders, how to effectively challenge racism and how to put an end to the Minuteman Project. These strategies will be put into action from September 16-18th in a series of actions and a No Border Camp in Calexico.

Right on Rh Dana Place - becomes Ocean Blvd.. Vigil will be on Ocean Blvd. along the beach.) No parking will be permitted along Ocean Blvd. on Monday and Tuesday. Demonstration at NAS NORTH ISLAND MAIN GATE on Alameda. Main Gate on Alameda, Coronado, Tuesday, August 30, 6 a.m. Gates will open at 6:00 a.m. for the 10,000 "invited guests" and the ceremony will take place at 8:00 a.m. True to form, this will be a harbor-side event so protestors can be kept far from this location. However, the road leading to North Island in Coronado would be a good protest location. Since parking in Coronado is scarce and parking laws are enforced, the North County Coalition for Peace and Justice will be using public transportation to get there. On Friday August 12, Arizona governor Bill Richardson, a Democrat, declared a state of emergency in the counties bordering Mexico. On Monday, Janet Napolitano, the Democratic governor of Arizona, declared a similar emergency in her state. The California legislature is debating a similar declaration. Usually associated with disasters such as floods and earthquakes, these state of emergency declarations are being issued to get 3.25 million dollars in federal funds to increase the militarized policing of the US-Mexico border.

Two migrant people were shot under mysterious circumstances last week in the border region where the Minutemen have been patrolling. One was shot in Mexico and one was shot inside the US. While "Mexican authorities" have claimed that "bandits" were behind it, the victims were quick to point out that nothing was stolen from them. This strange circumstance is added to by the fact that these "bandits" used laser scopes to target their victims.

Numerous calls have been made to the sheriff in Campo, CA, but still no investigation is taking place. In addition, James Chase admits to transporting undocumented people, which is a crime, but he is also not having charges pressed against him, unlike the volunteers in Ariznoa who were sent to jail for taking migrants in critical condition to a hospital. Many are saying, "Chase and Co. MUST be investigated". Gente Unida held a press conference on Friday, July 29th to address this issue.

Confirmed association between the CA Minutemen, SOS and Neo-Nazis

The following photos posted to sd indymedia on 7/30/2005 clearly show neo-nazis from the National Vangaurd participating in Save Our State protests. Joe Turner, head of SOS, is currently participating in the CA Minutemen's patrol of Campo CA'a border fence. This is an obvious indicator that SOS is a racist group and that there is a clear link between the neo-nazis and the Minutemen.

The San Diego Coalition to Stop the Genocide in Sudan held two events on Thursday, July 21 to build local awareness of the continuing crisis in Sudan: a rally at the Civic Center at noon and a vigil at a North Park church at 7 p.m. Most of the speakers at the vigil were Sudanese immigrants who discussed the genocidal conditions in their home country and their difficulties in assimilating in the U.S. At least one speaker also said that President Bush had helped push the Muslim-dominated government of Sudan to negotiate with the country's Christian populations, and said that the prayers of Sudanese-Americans had helped Bush beat Kerry in last year's election.

Anti-MinuteMen, No Border Camp Continues

From the beginning, there has been resistance to the border vigilantes. Since the protests and confrontations at the VFW on June 16th, actions against the MinuteMen have continued throughout the week as the Gente Unida, Anti-MinuteMen, No Border camp in Campo was maintained. During the week, there were reports that the people of Campo were making efforts to remove the MinuteMen [report here]. Tuesday night, the Buenas Noches Brigade disrupted the MinuteMen for over an hour [photos here]. Starting on Wednesday, the 2nd Virtual sit-in against the MinuteMen, by SWARM the MinuteMen and Electronic Disturbance Theater began taking anti-immigrant sites offline [interview here, announcement, more info].

Thursday morning a press conference was held at Playas De Tijuana, the site where the border is being torn down and reconstructed [photos and story].

Saturday night, about 60 demonstrators with the Gente Unida Coalition held a vigil at the border wall with the Mexican press, to highlight the injustices and 3200 deaths that this metal scar has caused. Following the vigil, a march along the wall to the Minutemen camp ensued, with ended in a series of tense, face-to-face confrontations. The Buenos Noches Brigade arrived with music, poetry, speeches, and humor to lighten the situation that the armed vigilantes presented. [photos and story, another report]

Also on Saturday night, a report has come out that there were nonfatal shootings of two Mexican men in the border area between Campo and Tecate early Saturday. [corporate story].

She argued that not only does the U.S. need a socialist revolution but that racism, sexism, anti-Queer prejudices and all other forms of oppression need to be dealt with now, not "after the revolution," to build the unity needed to win. Feinberg also discussed the so-called "REAL ID Act" and how it will hurt Transgender people and women who've fled abusive relationships, as well as the undocumented immigrants it deliberately targeted.

Just east of San Diego, the border vigilantes are already camping out. The local version of the Arizona Minutemen, this group, calling themselves California Border Watch will be met with a campout of opposition. Gente Unida is organizing a strategy campout from July 15-19 in Campo, California. Campo is about an hour from San Diego and is on the border. A rally is scheduled on July 16th at noon. Carpools leave at 10am, Saturday July 16th from Chicano Park OR meet us there. Directions: I-8 to Buckman Springs Road, South to 94, Right to Campo, South to Forest Gate, Look for signs/people at the VFW or Border Patrol buildings.

The o.r.g.a.n.i.c. collective has made a call out to Disrupt the MinuteMen, Campo, July 16-19th for all those who "oppose racist violence to come to Campo, California, one hour east of San Diego, from July 16th to 19th and disrupt, interfere with and stop the activities of the MinuteMen."
