The out-of-town organizers who set up the Americans for Safe Access program on medical marijuana June 29 expected such a low turnout they booked a room at the San Diego Public Library downtown that only seated 49 people. Instead, over 100 people, most of them medical marijuana users themselves, turned out.

The San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles activists who hosted the "Liberation Weekend" conference May 15-16 expected some attention from law enforcement, but the scope and intensity of the harassment surprised even them. At a San Diego Action Network meeting June 25, conference participants described heavy surveillance, warrantless searches, pre-emptive arrests and infiltration of undercover agents with the intent to intensify and exploit disagreements and distrust within activist collectives.

San Diego's voters will decide November 2 whether to conduct a five-year trial of a radical new form of city government that will make the Mayor, not a hired city manager, the city's chief administrative officer. The San Diego Democratic Club debated the change June 24 and was skeptical about the claims of more "accountability" under a strong Mayor and the political motives of the proponents, as well as the secrecy with which the proposal was drafted.

In a surprisingly contentious 2 1/2-hour meeting, the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club endorsed Sheila Jackson over Sharon Whitehurst-Payne in the citywide runoff election for the San Diego Unified School District board seat in District “E.” However, the club was unable to come to an endorsement decision in District “D,” though it rated one of the candidates, Benjamin Hueso, “acceptable.”
