Amy Goodman Speaks in San Diego Nov. 5
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
While the estimate of 1,500 in the audience published elsewhere on this Web site seems inflated, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman's first appearance in San Diego Nov. 5 at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest did more than fill every seat in a 600-seat hall and drew an enthusiastic crowd. Her rambling but intense presentation was mostly a critique of the corporate media and a call for independent journalists and activists to stay committed in the face of the Nov. 2 electoral defeat.

150 March Downtown in "Beyond Voting" Nov. 3
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
A "Beyond Voting" rally and march in San Diego November 3, part of a nationwide mobilization in 36 cities planned before the election and designed to put pressure on whoever won and stress the need for activism rather than relying on the ballot box, drew nearly 150 people for a march from the waterfront to the NBC Channel 39 headquarters at Horton Plaza. Though the mobilizers were nonpartisan the mood at the event was considerably angrier than it would have been if Bush hadn't won.

Report on October 9 Media EmergenC Conf.
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
“Pessimism of the mind and optimism of the will.” That’s how UCSD communications professor Robert Horwitz began the Media EmergenC conference at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park October 9: with a quote from Italian socialist Antonio Gramsci that summed up how he believes progressives, radicals and Leftists should look at today’s media world. The conference was the fourth and final event of Media EmergenC, a community mobilization against the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and its Radio Show convention in San Diego.
