Author Speaks on Revolution in Nepal
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Author and journalist Li Onesto spoke at Casa del Libro bookstore in Hillcrest February 1 about her new book, "Dispatches from the People's War in Nepal." In an unexpectedly timely appearance — the day she spoke Nepal's king suspended the constitution and all civil liberties — she explained the politics of the Nepalese People's Army and its political arm, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). She said the People's Army controls much of rural Nepal and is in the next-to-last stage of its struggle, but fears intervention from the U.S., U.K., India or China if it actually takes state power.

Queer Democrats Endorse Filner for Congress
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger‘s Newsmagazine,

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club gave progressive Democratic Congressmember Bob Filner an early endorsement against moderate state legislator Juan Vargas, who will run against him in the 2006 Democratic primary. Filner, who participated in direct action for civil rights long before he sought elective office, told club members at their January 27 meeting that only a combination of aggressive street activism and involvement in electoral politics will enable progressives to defeat the Bush agenda.

And the police were afraid!
Rocky,

And the police were afraid! For the first time in over three decades I saw fear in the face of police as they confronted demonstrators - and it smelled good. The anti-inaguaration activities of January 20th was the tale of two marches: one staid, predictable; the other; spontaneous, pulsating, youthful energy that shifted beyond the politics of protest.

San Diegans Reclaim the Streets on J20!
imcista,

San Diego, January 20th 2005 – After the SDCPJ rally and the Ground Zero Players Cacelorazo in downtown San Diego, hundreds of people stepped off the sidewalk at Broadway to begin the Reclaim the Streets party. From 7-10pm, people moved up and down 4th ave, circling around, facing off lines of cops, sometimes outmaneuvering them, other times walking right into them traps. Bikers, musicians, jugglers, dancers and more filled the streets with life in direct contrast to the contained commerical atmosphere of clubs and shops all around them. There were four arrests made; all arrestees are out already, with trials pending.
