Over 1,000 Turn Out to San Diego Peace Events
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
San Diego’s contribution to the international day of opposition to the U.S. war on Iraq on Saturday, September 24 was highly successful, with over 1,000 people participating in the afternoon rally at Sixth and Laurel in Balboa Park and the feeder marches that led to it. But the rally revealed some differences between members of the anti-war coalition that threaten its ability to hold together and reach out to the broader U.S. public, especially people who’ve decided that the war was a mistake in the first place but aren’t ready to support an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

Prison Boom a Product of Racism, Matlin Says
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
The United States, home to six percent of the world’s population, contains 25 percent of the world’s prisoners, David Matlin, literature professor at San Diego State University and former teacher in New York state prisons, told an audience of about 60 at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest September 16. Drawing part of his talk from his book, "Prisons: Inside the New America," Matlin combined shocking statistics about the sheer reach of America’s burgeoning prison system with reflections about what the high rate of incarceration means to us as a society and to our values.

Bob Alba w/sdimc,
Calexico had many successes Saturday and early Sunday morning. According to the public and most major news sources, the human rights protestors have effectively shut down or delayed the Friends of the Border Patrol (FBP) from inaugurating their fall vigilante watch. Here are some pictures from one of the insipiring parts of the day as we broke down Border paradigms.

America Is Bankrupt
Mike (in Tokyo) Rogers,
09/12/05 "Lewrockwell" -- -- A recent trip to the United States – after a three-year absence – showed me how far the country and its people have deteriorated in a short period of time. Americans are bankrupt. They are bankrupt at every possible level: spiritually, morally, educationally. The country’s economy has deteriorated to the level of a Philippines or a Thailand (and I mean no disrespect to the Philippines or Thailand – I love those places).

Grand Jury Grinds On
lotu5,
After over 40 days in jail for refusing to cooperate with an investigation into a public forum, San Diego activists are now, and will continue to stand by their beliefs. They need your support in the form of letters, donations and books more than ever.
The following statement from David Agranoff was recently posted to San Diego Indymedia: In the wake of Recent Events I wanted to issue a statement for all of MY SUPPORTERS here in SAN DIEGO, Nationally and Yes WORLDWIDE. Many of you have sent wonderful letters, money and books. Locally you have carried signs and SHOWN UP faithfully to court dates and fundraisers. I can honestly say that it TOUCHES ME DEEPLY.
Since our Dago Activist Community came under attack there have been ups and downs in terms of betrayals and solidarity. MOST of you have stood strong to resist this GRAND JURY REPRESSION. At this point I have already SPENT 40 DAYS IN PRISON TO DEFEND the ACTIVIST COMMUNITY. Some of you were at Rod's Lecture or maybe just friends were there. I am doing OK living in this PRISON the system CAN NOT break me.
ALL I ASK, you don't have to protest, you don't have to write a letter, ALL I ASK is you READ this essay from beginning to end. I am not asking for much. [Complete Call for Solidarity]

A Call For Solidarity
David Agranoff,
David mailed me this statement asking for solidarity and asked that I post it on IndyMedia. There are only a few spelling errors/typos in David's letter because he had to write this in a bit of a hurry, but I will try to make them coherent while keeping as much of David's writing in it's original form as possible. Hopefully I don't add my own typos as I type this out.

San Diegans Report Back from Sheehan's Camp
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Eight San Diegans who'd gone down to Crawford, Texas to support Cindy Sheehan in her demand that President Bush tell her to her face what noble cause her son died for in Iraq reported back on September 3. Following their presentations there was a discussion on what the peace movement should do next. Many of the speakers tied their remarks to Hurricane Katrina and said Iraq and Katrina both reflected the skewed priorities and awesome incompetence of the Bush administration.

What's wrong with the ISO?
infoshop.org,
First is the selling of the newspaper. So much emphasis was placed on this activity alone that it was a requirement listed on the membership card that one signs upon joining. The ISO considered themselves the only legitimate heirs of Trotsky and Lenin, and their newspaper, Socialist Worker, the new Iskra. This was the main vehicle through which we were going to spread "socialist ideas and revolutionary consciousness." Never mind that the paper reads like a grade-school synthesis of the bourgeois press with some stock socialist phrases tacked on to the end of each paragraph.
...
While there might be an appearance of democratic debate within the group at the branch level, ultimately, everything is pretty much decided by the center in Chicago.

This is only part of a large movement against the MinuteMen, La Migra and the Border itself. Thursday night before the conference, La Raza Rights Coalition held a community forum to present their demands around these issues to legislators. Next weekend, Sept 2-4, BorderHack 2005 will be taking place in Tijuana. Also that weekend, on the 3rd, is a forum against the Minutemen in Chula Vista.
The Encuentro was planned as a space to strategize about how to create a world without borders, how to effectively challenge racism and how to put an end to the Minuteman Project. These strategies will be put into action from September 16-18th in a series of actions and a No Border Camp in Calexico.

Nicole Fink will reappear before federal grand jury on Tuesday, August 23 at 9 a.m. On August 17, she appeared in court for what she believed would be a contempt hearing for refusing to testify. She was surprised to find that there was no contempt hearing, and that the judge actually rescheduled her to appear before the grand jury. Again, she will refuse to testify.
