Though San Francisco-based legislator Carole Migden was announced as the keynote speaker for the San Diego Democratic Club's annual Freedom Banquet November 15, the emotional high point of the evening was the J. Douglas Scott Political Action Award and other tributes paid to veteran San Diego Latina activist Gracia Molina de Pick, who received commendations from Congressmember Bob Filner, former Presidential and gubernatorial aide Midge Costanza and former San Diego Democratic Party chair Maureen Steiner.

Community activists are doing their part to help put pressure on the stores as well. Two Arrested in Grocery Strike Support Demo

A November 15 demonstration called in support of striking workers at the Vons and Albertson's supermarkets turned into a confrontation with San Diego police when two representatives of the sponsoring organizations, Pete Reilly of San Diego A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and Jeremy Prickett of the California Coalition Against Poverty (CCAP), were arrested shortly after the march stepped off. Protesters assembled at the Oregon Street Park between Polk and Howard Streets in North Park at 11:30 a.m. for a preliminary rally, then spilled out in the streets as the march began.

Diversionary Theatre, San Diego's Queer-themed theatre company, presents ?Another American: Asking and Telling," Marc Wolf's searing, often heart-rending one-performer play about Queers in the military and the effects of the ?don't ask, don't tell" policy, through Saturday, December 6 at 4545 Park Boulevard, 1 1/2 blocks south of Adams Avenue in University Heights. Drawing on the examples of Anna Deveare Smith and Moises Kaufman, Wolf interviewed people involved in the military either as Queer servicemembers, opponents of Queer service and even sociologist Charles Moskos, who thought up the ?don't ask, don't tell" policy and actually coined the phrase. The result was a fast-moving, challenging piece dramatizing 18 characters, all drawn from real life and presented in their own exact words.
