Mike Byron Speaks on "Infinity's Rainbow"
Mike Byron on "Infinity's Rainbow" in S.D.,

Mike Byron Mike Byron, author, political science professor and former Congressional candidate, spoke to the San Diego Humanist Association at the San Diego Public Library May 20 and introduced his new book, "Infinity's Rainbow." LIke the book, his presentation linked four issues that threaten the very existence of U.S. and world civilization: global warming, the exhaustion of the world's fossil-fuel reserves, the incredible power corporations have over American politics and the rising influence of the radical Christian Right, particularly the so-called "dispensationalists" who regard war in the Middle East as a necessary step towards the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Book of Revelation and their own salvation in a divine "Rapture" that will lift them bodily from this earth just before it collapses.

Longshore Workers Picket Stops War Cargo
The Internationalist,

Antiwar pickets shut down terminal of war cargo shipper in port of Oakland This can be an important first step toward the mobilization of workers power to shut down the war machine, but that requires a sharp struggle against the bourgeois politics of the antiwar groups and union officialdom. The OEA calls for money for schools not for war, as if it were a matter of budget priorities, and the PAC poster made a social-patriotic pitch to “Bring the Troops Home Now, and give them the care they need.” Such “peace is patriotic” rhetoric is a staple of the UPFJ, but all the antiwar coalitions make similar appeals to garner support from Democratic Party liberals. Revolutionaries and class-conscious workers, in contrast, emphasize that this imperialist war must be opposed by class war.

Film School Confidential: Student Films Rock!
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

The 2007 "Film School Confidential" showing took place April 15 at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. This annual event showcases the best student films made in the San Diego/Tijuana region. Many of this year's films dealt with cross-border issues, giving voice to immigrant Elijio Gonzalez, pioneering Chicano artist Victor Ochoa and church activists who build homes for people in Tijuana. Other films included a documentary on upscale dog-grooming establishments and an hilarious anti-racist satire called "The Crayola Monologues."

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. The Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC has more than tripled the royalty rates for webcasters and left unchanged they will kill Internet radio. These exorbitant rates go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). Without Congressional action the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. We need your help. Please take a moment to send a letter to your member of Congress to keep Net radio from being silenced.

Michael Parenti Speaks on "Culture Struggle"
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Michael Parenti From Mark Conlan: Michael Parenti, Berkeley-based Leftist author and professor, gave several talks on a recent tour of San Diego, inclding one at the Malcolm X Library March 7 on "The Culture Struggle." Parenti analyzed the connection between culture and class in Marxist terms, saying that culture is the way an owning class trains the working class to have the values that will make working people content with their lives and disinclined to challenge the existing ownership and control of the means of production. In his speech, and his similarly titled book, he also scorned "cultural relativism" — saying the idea that people brought up in one culture can't judge those from another has been used to defend social evils like slavery and rape — and also talked about capitalism has increasingly turned culture into a commodity.

From white m@le fed up with White Males: What a surprise to see a white male criticizing the experiences of people of color, women, and queer folk. and also surprise, he's a marxist! congratulations sir, you and your irrelevant ideology are part of the same culture that aims to perpetuate the oppression of people of color, women, and queer folk. of course the experiences of black women (for example) are subordinate to your epistemological claims! because you follow a long tradition of western enlightenment thinking that has hegemonically controlled the discourses of truth for hundreds of years!...

From shine: i am a queer female, and i was not offended by parentis words at all. i don't think he was "critisizing" our experiences as you say. in fact i think they are largely right-on. though i do find a unique solidarity amongst other queers or other womyn (and could understand why blacks would find a unique solidarity with each other or diabled folks would) i ultimately think parenti is right that our focus should be on the ruling class and should be on the ways in which we are all subservients and need to take back power... the fact that marx and parenti were both white males doesn't make their words untrue...

More from white m@le fed up with White Males: ...the idea that all hierarchy can be reduced to simple class functionalism is absurd. which is essentially the problem with marxism as a whole and the focus for the majority of criticism of the ideology by people who are actually interested in eradicating hierarchy. sure, we can all fall into step behind this notion that class is the only thing that matters, but will that topple patriarchy (the mujeres libres ran into this same problem in the spanish civil war)? racism? homophobia? are we really expected to believe that these are only tools utilized by the bourgeoisie to oppress the workers and not completely enculturated patterns of behavior representing hundreds of years of life under oppressive governmental and economic systems?...

From anarchomarxist: ...The slippery slope of identity here reduces to either the individual's own oppression being different from any others' resulting in the assertion of the individual as the main agent of history (the re-assertion of liberalism) or the next step in the critique which is the deconstruction of the individual as anon [white m@le fed up with White Males] suggests. The former brings with it all the problems of liberalism from the enlightenment that Hegel, Marx and many Anarchist theorists sought to problematize, critique and move to something more liberatory (theoretically only in the case of Hegel) that would not only better explain phenomena but lead to a sustaining practice. And the later results in a never ending negation of all postulates that seek to get agency off the ground (the postmodern predicament). Anon [white m@le fed up with White Males] suggests the later is how we should view individuals but fails to acknowledge the theory and practice problems that comport to this mode of discourse...

freEtech 2007 -- an (un)conference: march 25 san diego
dj lotu5,

freEtech 2007 -- an (un)Conference: san diego, march 25th

why freEtech 2007?
Community. Free Software. Openness. All of the values of the Free Software movement are totally violated by O’Reilly publishing’s conferences. These same values are what has made internet culture exciting and vibrant and an important social force, and they are also the words that O’Reilly uses to market its $1500 per seat ETech conference.

If you care about creating and sustaining a technological culture that is accessible to everyone, instead of being accessible to those who have $1500 to blow on a 4 day conference, then help us create freEtech, a free and open unconference in San Diego on March 25th, the day before eTech begins. There’s a reason why the list of presenters is overwhelmingly white men, we’ll talk about why...

Big Brother Is Reading Your E-Mail
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

For almost a year it's been known that, in addition to tapping billions of phone calls made in the U.S., the federal government's so-called "Terrorist Surveillance Program" has also been eavesdropping on people's e-mails. If you use AT&T as your Internet service provider, or if your e-mails ever go through AT&T's network (which is just about everybody in San Diego and southern California), the government has a copy. You shouldn't be so naive as to expect your Internet communications to be private, not when we're ruled by a government that hates the very concept of privacy as much as the Bush administration does. Instead, if you wouldn't shout it out on a street corner for everyone to hear, don't write it in an e-mail or post it on line.

San Diego Indymedia in Transition
four san diego indymedia volunteers,

Volunteers with the San Diego Independent Media Center have embarked on a year long effort to revamp the SDIMC website and our relationship to activist groups and underrepresented communities in the San Diego/Tijuana border region

Tentativamente nuestras prioridades iniciales incluyen:
Our tentative initial priorities include:
--Upgrading the SDIMC Website so that it better serves our contributors and readers and so its technical maintenance is accessible to a broader range of volunteers.
--Improving Accessibility to reading and contributing to the website for those who might have episodic or no internet access, by generating print and audio versions of the website, and by facilitating audio and written submissions.
--Moving Towards a Bilingual Website by providing assistance to and incentives for our bilingual readers/volunteers to help with translations, and by encouraging a broader range of spanish language submissions.
--Establishing Better Connections with Activist and Community Groups so that all significant events in the region affecting our readers are announced/reported on.

The FBI, Cell Phones and You
san diego indymedia volunteer and repost from CNET,

Remove Battery. NOW! I am not a paranoid conspiracy theorist. I do not believe the twin towers fell because Dick Cheney planted explosives in them. I do not think the Kennedys were assassinated by space aliens. But I have one request: before you read another word of this story out loud to yourself or your friends, TAKE THE F*N BATTERY OUT OF YOUR CELL PHONE!

Let me explain. We all know that the NSA is monitoring our phone conversations and reading our e-mails, without warrants or oversight or any of that messy red tape, because, any one of us, especially if we have a tendency to question the corporate security state, could at any time turn into a TERRORIST. We also know that the FBI as well as local security forces have been infiltrating groups who advocate for peace, animals and the Earth, because, well, you know. These actions combined with the recently revealed Automated Targeting System and numerous other programs have led most people to self-regulate their speech and actions, to avoid the possibility of being branded an eco-terrorist (green scare), a potential presidential assassin or an Islamic terrorist.

But to the clever geeks at the FBI, this climate of fear and paranoia simply isn't enough. And so they, in partnership with their corporate collaborators, have devised a way to listen to our conversations using cell phones. But, you say, the NSA is already doing that! No, the FBI is listening to you even when you aren't talking to someone using your cell phone. What? As revealed in a judge's ruling related to investigation of the feds' competitors, the Mafia, the FBI's eggheads have figured out how to reprogram your phone, without ever having access to it, so that they can activate the microphone and listen by calling your phone from anywhere, without you having a clue. OK, you say, I will just turn off my phone. Nope. Many models of phones (thank you Verizon!) can be turned on remotely, again, without a trace.

And so all of us who have cell phones are wired directly to the den of thieves. Even amongst trusted friends, we have to "watch what we say, watch what we do." The only ways to defeat this intrusion are to take the battery out of your cell phone, leave your phone at home, or responsibly recycle it.

Welcome to homeland insecurity. How can we help you?

Okupa! Video about squats in Southern Europe
dj lotu5 and the platform,

Okupa! This is an early, rough cut of this film. I'm not sure what direction I want to go with this and am looking for feedback.

Okupa investigates Deleuze's figure of the urban nomad, engaging in war with the state through the creation of smooth spaces. The video shows the activities and struggles of 4 occupied social centers or squats: Dezguace, Seco and Labo 03 all in Madrid and Casa de Iniciativas 1.5 in Málaga. The film shows the hacklabs, theater productions and workshops that are the daily activity of the social centers as well as the struggles against eviction.

The video is a rough cut, and as such has small editing glitches. Also, it is partially subtitled, but not contiguously subtited, so if you don't speak spanish and the subtitles stop, skip ahead to the next section of the film.

(can anyone help me translate this email into español?)
