This intercontinental network of resistance, recognising differences and acknowledging similarities, will search to find itself with other resistances around the world. This intercontinental network of resistance will be the medium in which distinct resistances may support one another. International Human Rights Organization Opposes HR4437
AFSC,
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) vehemently opposes the anti-immigrant Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 (HR 4437), which has been introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI). This bill does little to address the root causes of migration to the United States, or the underlying social and economic conditions of both legal and undocumented workers.

A Call For Solidarity
David Agranoff,
David mailed me this statement asking for solidarity and asked that I post it on IndyMedia. There are only a few spelling errors/typos in David's letter because he had to write this in a bit of a hurry, but I will try to make them coherent while keeping as much of David's writing in it's original form as possible. Hopefully I don't add my own typos as I type this out.

An Encuentro Against All Borders
sd indymedia,
The No Border Encuentro took place on August 27-28th at the Sherman Heights Community Center in San Diego/Aztlan. Two days of events including a maquiladora tour, a benefit concert and a day of forums, panels and encounters took place with over 100 people from San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Orange County, Eugene, Portland, Tijuana, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia participating. On the walls hung photos of recent actions to stop the Minutemen, a poster of the PGA Hallmarks, and maps of Calexico, where the No Border Camp will be in September. [Complete Summary, another account]
Radio coverage was done all weekend by Blast Furnace Radio, due to some technical difficultues at radioActive sanDiego.

This is only part of a large movement against the MinuteMen, La Migra and the Border itself. Thursday night before the conference, La Raza Rights Coalition held a community forum to present their demands around these issues to legislators. Next weekend, Sept 2-4, BorderHack 2005 will be taking place in Tijuana. Also that weekend, on the 3rd, is a forum against the Minutemen in Chula Vista.
The Encuentro was planned as a space to strategize about how to create a world without borders, how to effectively challenge racism and how to put an end to the Minuteman Project. These strategies will be put into action from September 16-18th in a series of actions and a No Border Camp in Calexico.

Mysterious shooting of 2 migrants, Chase suggests "rogue" Minutemen
Chicomozteca,
UPDATE: Two audio reports from Campo, CA on 2005-07-31:
http://radio.indymedia.org/news/2005/08/6263.php
http://radio.indymedia.org/news/2005/08/6264.php
Two migrant people were shot under mysterious circumstances last week in the border region where the Minutemen have been patrolling. One was shot in Mexico and one was shot inside the US. While "Mexican authorities" have claimed that "bandits" were behind it, the victims were quick to point out that nothing was stolen from them. This strange circumstance is added to by the fact that these "bandits" used laser scopes to target their victims.
Numerous calls have been made to the sheriff in Campo, CA, but still no investigation is taking place. In addition, James Chase admits to transporting undocumented people, which is a crime, but he is also not having charges pressed against him, unlike the volunteers in Ariznoa who were sent to jail for taking migrants in critical condition to a hospital. Many are saying, "Chase and Co. MUST be investigated". Gente Unida held a press conference on Friday, July 29th to address this issue.
To contact the sheriff, Phone: (619) 478-5378 Fax: (619) 478-9076 or go to: http://www.sdsheriff.net/rural/substations_campo.html

Anti-MinuteMen, No Border Camp Continues
san diego indymedia,
From the beginning, there has been resistance to the border vigilantes. Since the protests and confrontations at the VFW on June 16th, actions against the MinuteMen have continued throughout the week as the Gente Unida, Anti-MinuteMen, No Border camp in Campo was maintained. During the week, there were reports that the people of Campo were making efforts to remove the MinuteMen [report here]. Tuesday night, the Buenas Noches Brigade disrupted the MinuteMen for over an hour [photos here]. Starting on Wednesday, the 2nd Virtual sit-in against the MinuteMen, by SWARM the MinuteMen and Electronic Disturbance Theater began taking anti-immigrant sites offline [interview here, announcement, more info].
Thursday morning a press conference was held at Playas De Tijuana, the site where the border is being torn down and reconstructed [photos and story].
Saturday night, about 60 demonstrators with the Gente Unida Coalition held a vigil at the border wall with the Mexican press, to highlight the injustices and 3200 deaths that this metal scar has caused. Following the vigil, a march along the wall to the Minutemen camp ensued, with ended in a series of tense, face-to-face confrontations. The Buenos Noches Brigade arrived with music, poetry, speeches, and humor to lighten the situation that the armed vigilantes presented. [photos and story, another report]
Also on Saturday night, a report has come out that there were nonfatal shootings of two Mexican men in the border area between Campo and Tecate early Saturday. [corporate story].

(no)Border between TJ/SD - Las Playas
onto,
A press conference concerning Gente Unida, the Minutemen, and the Buenas Noches Brigaes was held at Las Playas on Thursday at Noon in Tijuana right by the border fence. Strangely enough, the border fence is being torn down right there . . . only to put up a bigger, stronger one (circa Germany's Berlin Wall).

No Migra! No Minutemen! Ya Basta!
A wave of anti-immigrant hysteria is sweeping the United States. Racist vigilante groups such as the Minutemen Project, Friends of the Border Patrol and Save our State have taken it upon themselves to “secure the border” by scapegoating and attacking immigrants.

Congress Recommends Sending Troops to Border
repost from washington post,
From the Washington Post: "The deployment of 36,000 National Guard troops or state militia on the U.S.-Mexico border would stop the illegal flow of foreigners into America, says a congressional report that credits the Minuteman Project with proving that additional manpower could "dramatically reduce if not virtually eliminate" illegal immigration."
Just what we need, more troops, this time operating within our own country. I wonder how far inland from the border these troops will operate? Who will they be attacking? Who benefits from all this? Who profits?

Tijuana Workers Celebrate May 1st With Rally

While San Diego's upscale progressive community, from feely-goody new age yuppies and aging hippies to the power liberals who run the pitiful left-wing response to Bushism in San Diego, flocked to the corporate sponsored Earth Day festival, May 1st; others, workers around the world, refused to give up the their traditional day to celebrate the world's

A Rising Movement Against The MinuteMen and the Border
lotus for sd indymedia,
UPDATE 4/5/2005 9:00AM - Press conference today and National Days of Action to stop REAL ID
What better place than Tombstone, Arizona, where gun-toting actors dressed like sheriffs and outlaws keep the nostalgia of the Wild West alive, to be the focal point of yet another vigilante convergence. The Minuteman Project, as it is called, is being organized by two of southern Arizona's most notorious and outspoken border vigilantes: Chris Simcox and Jim Gilchrist. Their plan is to place "observers" every quarter mile along a 20-mile stretch of border from Douglas to the San Pedro River during the month of April.
However, their actions will not go unopposed. Legal observers are being trained to watch over and document the Minutemen. Counter protests, vigils and other border activities are also planned to take place throughout April. ( April Unity Events ) In San Diego and Tijuana, on April 2nd, 2005, numerous organizations including the Border Angels, FIST ( Fight Imperialism, Stand Together), the Brown Berets, Code Pink, and the ORGANIC collective held a march and a rally at the US/Mexico border, the site of the construction of the Triple Border Fence. This rally was against HR 418, against the Triple Border Fence and against the Minutemen. Between 50 and 75 people were in attendance for the 1.5 mile march, followed by a rally on both sides of the fence. In addition, plans for borderHack 2.005 were announced for this summer.
As the MinuteMen project in Arizona takes the media spotlight, Congress is quietly trying to roll back 30 years of environmental regulations and create a buffer zone of martial law along the borders of the US. HR 418 recently passed in the House and is currently being fast tracked through the Senate. This law would completely exempt any project to build fences or roads in the region of the borders of the US from all environmental laws. This would include the border with Canada as well as the border with Mexico.
