The First Cross-Border Encuentro of La Otra Campaña: Summary
queer-j brad,
The First Cross-Border Encuentro of La Otra Campaña was held in Tijuana and San Diego September 15-17.
A key component of the Zapatista Other Campaign, originating with the Sixth Declaration of the Selva Lacandona, is a tour of Mexico to offer an alternative to the farce of electoral politics, by documenting the struggles of and listening to "the simple and humble people" - a national program of struggle from Below.
The EZLN Sixth Commission's tour has been suspended since the brutal attack by state and federal forces on the people of San Salvador Atenco May 3-4. Local groups working with La Otra Campaña organized the Cross-Border Encuentro as the Sixth Commission focused its attention on solidarity with the people of Atenco.
In Tijuana, 250 compañer@s heard from activist panels discussing women in resistance movements; indigenous struggles; autonomy; culture and art; culture and media; resistance against borders; and resistance against climate change and environmental destruction; as well as music, dance and theater from the struggle.
In San Diego, parallel meetings on the 15th and 17th were organized as freeflowing, participatory roundtable discussions that covered diverse topics, including women, patriarchy and machismo; personal connections with La Otra; listening as a tactic; maquiladora workers; struggles and resistance north of the border; and community building vs. armed revolution.
The Sixth Commission recently announced that it will resume its journey on October 9, following the arrival of reinforcements to work for the release of Atenco prisoners, and will travel to Tijuana for a cross-border meeting planned for October 19.

San Diego Side of the First Cross-Border Encuentro: Part One
queer-j brad,
As part of the First Cross-Border Encuentro of La Otra Campaña, the Colectivo Zapatista de San Diego organized a meeting on the San Diego side at Voz Alta. On Friday, Sept 15, about 20 compañer@s watched a film about the Zapatistas and La Otra, and participated in a discussion regarding Zapatismo, listening, women in revolutionary movements, organizing in San Diego and other topics. A partial transcript of the discussion follows.
"One thing I learned from the Zapatistas is that over here in the Estados Unidos we overanalyze a lot of things. If something didn't work, it's like WHY DIDNT IT WORK? ~~~ One thing we do have to learn from each other here is how to listen, how to step back and listen. ~~~ It is hard to really believe in something right now. With organizing and mobilizations, we lose momentum in a lot of things we do, and this movement seems like it continues its momentum in terms of its organizing. ~~~ We do live in a patriarchical society and world. I think it is very important for us mujeres to say ya basta, it's time to speak up and for people to listen. ~~~ Sometimes it is not so much like women's problems, but fucking machismo. And you know machismo is just like egocentrism. The taking up of space from other people and not stepping back, ever. ~~~ A lot of the time movements take into consideration women as a question or something that is secondary. In the Zapatista movement, they play a primary role. ~~~ There are a lot of people who are like "oh, the Zapatistas are coming, wow, let's go!" Yeah that's also a part of it, so we can also learn from them, but it's how can we bring it back home? ~~~ These people in business suits making all these big decisions, and those kinds of ways of thinking are in me."
"Every time through history, we analyze history, every time we change the political structure of a country, it's through revolution. ~~~ Another thing that we lack is the basic understanding of collectivity. You said the Zapatistas should take power, but when I think about the compañer@s that I have worked with all my life, seriously, I don't trust any of the organizations that I work with, even though I have given my life to them, to take power. ~~~ On this side we are inside the belly of the beast. So, what can we do here, so that we can build an anti-capitalist movement here, that can parallel and support the movement that is being created in Mexico? ~~~ I don't think that revolution should be the next step. What good is it to be killing each other. Who is going to be left for us to build our world? ~~~ You gotta have your good times, you can't fight a revolution just being bitter about things, you have to have your culture, you have to have your music, you gotta apply all of these things within your revolution, or its not worth having. If we start building community, the struggle will come within that, and we will be there together."

"Border War" Protest Video
qjb,
Human rights activists from Border Angels, Friends of Day Laborers and other groups gathered at the AMC Mission Valley to protest the opening of the propaganda film Border War, which was produced by the extreme right wing group, Citizens United and directed by Kevin Knoblock, whose other "credits" are Celsius 41.11 and a bio of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Enrique Morones of Border Angels, who appeared in the movie, talked to the corporate media about the humanity and goodness of migrants, and the need to transcend the racist rhetoric of the right wing to find ways to ensure human rights for everyone.
Floyd Brown, the "Chair of the Board" of Citizens United, provoked a confrontation for the corporate cameras by badgering a human rights activist who was writing the message "No One is Illegal" on a sign. Floydie-boy has a long history as a racist, including producing the Willie Horton ad in 1988, widely credited with boosting Bush I into the presidency. Although he started strong and indeed produced a spectacle, he wasn't able to think beyond simple racist code words and eventually was chased from the limelight by cross-bearing humanitarians.

Mexican Election Deadlocked: Actual Count Wed
repost: nyc.indymedia.org, by John Tarleton ,
Both of the leading candidates in Mexico’s presidential election have claimed victory. Conservative free marketer Felipe Calderon holds a narrow one-point lead according to preliminary tallies of Sunday’s vote. The actual vote count doesn’t begin until Wednesday and could drag on for days. Supporters of leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador suspect he may be a victim of fraud after some exit polls showed him winning but they are taking a wait-and-see attitude until the final results are released. Mike Davis on Slums
queer-j brad,
On May 11 in International House's Great Hall at UCSD, urbanist, author and Professor of History at UC Irvine Mike Davis spoke to an audience of about 200 people about slums. Citing the UN-Habitat report, "The Challenge of Slums," Davis outlined the tragic facts about slums, including 1 billion current slum dwellers, an overlapping 1 billion people with no formal connection to their national or the global economy, and 2-3 billion people over the next half century most likely destined for slums. Summarizing his recent book, "Planet of Slums," Davis argued that slum expansion has reached a limit - an absence of free squatable land and the declining ability of slum dwellers to occupy survival niches has given rise to sectarian violence, child abandonment and other rational responses to desperate circumstances. He concluded with the hopeful picture of slums as incubators for burgeoning resistance movements.

queer-j brad,
On March 28 at Voz Alta, SDIMC and the San Diego Chapter of the Peace and Freedom Party presented the film Darkside of Cancun, which exposes the sharp economic divide between wealthy tourists and indigenous peoples in the resort town of Cancun, Mexico, and the widespread sex tourism and trafficking in women and children in Cancun. We are a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people of color who work in the LGBT movement. We are writing to you in response to Jasmyne Cannick's article "Gays First, Then Illegals", which ran in The Advocate, in which she, a black lesbian, argues that she cannot support the current battle for immigrant rights because LGBT people have not yet won the right to marry. We are writing to express our profound disagreement with her, and to offer alternative LGBT perspectives to the current immigration battles happening across the country.

Up to 100,000 Attend Mass Immigration March
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
San Diego's largest protest since the Viet Nam war took place Sunday, April 9, when up to 100,000 people jammed the streets to denounce the anti-immigrant bill passed by the House of Representatives and demand "dignity, respect and hope" for both documented and undocumented immigrants. The march was inspiring and festive, but the rally speeches were long on emotional tales of immigrants making good in the U.S. and short on specific demands. Some immigrant-rights activists had criticized the march organizers for not specifically calling for amnesty for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants currently in the U.S., and had held their own action the day before.

241-Mile March for Peace to Go From Tijuana to San Francisco
indybay.org, reposted by sd imc ,
Fernando Suarez del Solar, Pablo Paredes, Camilo Mejia, and Aidan Delgado will lead a "coalition of the willing" on a 241-mile quest for peace. They will start in Tijuana, Mexico on March 12th, go through Marine Corps Depot Camp Pendleton to the Cesar Chavez burial site in La Paz, CA (on March 22nd), and end in the Mission district of San Francisco with a memorial ceremony and blood drive on March 26th-27th.
Organizers say, "Latinos represent nearly 15% of the US population and 11% of the US military, with many serving in combat or hazardous duty occupations. In addition, an estimated 20% of the fallen service members in the early months of the invasion were Latino. With the continued growth of the Latino population and its vital importance to the future of this country, it is time the Latino community become an active and vocal part of the 60%+ of US citizens that oppose this War. It is also time to show the Latino community that they have a voice and a right to fight for peace and stability. We make this call not only to the Latino population but to all those who agree with our message 'No more bloodshed in Iraq'."
The March will pass through cities such as San Diego, Escondido, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Rosamond, Keene (La Paz), Fresno, and San Jose. Read more, including info about the march route and initiators. The march is in need of help such as funding, volunteers, media, organizers, and donations.
