“Oil Factor” Explores Motives in Terror War
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
French-born documentary filmmaker Gerard Ungerman brought his latest documentary, The Oil Factor: Behind the War on Terror, to the Peace and Democracy Task Force of the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest January 11 for a rare pre-theatrical release screening. The film, the latest of five Ungerman and his wife, Audrey Brohy, have produced, is a follow-up to their 2002 film The Hidden Wars of Desert Storm, containing footage (much of it shot by Ungerman and Brohy themselves) of life in Iraq just after the occupation as well as historical scenes and interviews.

Activists Report from Colombia, Iraq
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Two long-term activists in the San Diego community gave reports on their recent trips to the front lines of the so-called "war on terror" at Activist San Diego's January 10 meeting. Fernando Suárez del Solár, whose son was killed in Iraq in the early days of the war, talked about his second attempt to visit the country with a Global Exchange delegation, the refusal of Jordanian authorities to let his group cross the border, and the atrocities he heard about from Iraqis. Activist San Diego founder Martin Eder discussed the deteriorating situation in Colombia, where activists are killed by U.S.-backed paramilitaries and a Colombian government run by their former general.

A Video Message from the Iraqi Resistance
Yoshie,
Reuters obtained from Iraqi guerrillas "an English-language video urging U.S. troops to lay down their weapons and seek refuge in mosques and homes" (Michael Georgy, "Iraq Rebels in Video Taunt," January 12, 2005), promising protection to soldiers who heed their call.
The Information Clearing House has made the video and a transcript of its content available: "A Message from the 'Iraq Resistance.'"

Ethnic Cleansing: Israeli Zionist Historian
(posted by J Anderson),
Benny Morris says he was always a Zionist. People were mistaken ... when they thought that his historical study on the birth of the Palestinian refugee problem was intended to undercut the Zionist enterprise. Nonsense, Morris says ... So they came to the mistaken conclusion that when Morris describes the cruelest deeds that the Zionist movement perpetrated in 1948 he is actually being condemnatory, that when he describes the large-scale [ethnic] expulsion operations [against the Palestinians by Israel's founders] he is being denunciatory. They did not conceive that the great documenter of the sins of Zionism in fact identifies with those sins.

We are losing the Iraq War militarily: Conclu
Kevin Thomson ,
As illustrated in the previous sections, in the long run, America cannot afford to continue the Iraq War. Thus, by default, an American defeat in Iraq is inevitable. The best result for the U. S. is to find some face-saving excuses to withdraw all forces from Iraq without acknowledging defeat. We have plenty of spin masters and a forever appeasing media that can call the defeat a victory and the vast majority of domestic audiences will believe it, even though the rest of world won't be fooled.

Redeploying Disabled Gearing Up for Draft
Mike Whitney,
There's only one way the American people will accept the reinstatement of the draft. There would have to be "a massive casualty-producing event" on American soil. That's it. There's simply no other way Bush can get the popular support needed.

7 Retired Mililtary Leaders Tell What Is Wron
Paul Alexander ,
The nineteen months since the war in Iraq began, some of the most outspoken critics of President Bush's plan of attack have come from a group that should have been the most supportive: retired senior military leaders. We spoke with a group of generals and admirals that included a former supreme Allied commander and a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and they all agreed on one thing: Bush screwed up.

It’s Vietnam Again
Intervention Magazine,
We are losing in Iraq, and next year we will be losing more. Iraq is our second Vietnam. American political leaders insisted we would wipe out those Iraqi terrorists and criminals in no time, but it didn't happen. Just like in Vietnam. The U.S. media insisted that nearly all Iraqis welcomed U.S. occupation and that Iraqis would love Americans for giving them democracy and freedom. But Iraqi insurgents are killing Americans, and U.S.-trained Iraqi troops refuse to die for the U.S. occupation of their country. In Vietnam, Vietnamization failed. In Iraq, Iraqization is failing.

LYING KILLS
-Richard Reeves ,
By mission and nature, the military in a democracy exists in an alternate universe. President Richard Nixon, for one, brought as many officers into his White House as he could because they followed orders and kept their mouths shut. Still, he was not surprised in 1972 when he learned that military liaison officers were emptying in-boxes and wastebaskets at night in the White House and taking the contents over to the Pentagon for surreptitious inspection." You have to assume that the military serves itself," Nixon said to his civilians at the time. "They're watching you all the time."

At The Peace Rally
Drew Searing,
A guy at the Peace Rally who didn’t even know I was a writer handed me a four-by-five-inch leaflet and said,
“Write about your experience today and post it on our website. I encourage all writers who have lost their creativity, to begin writing.”
How did he know that my creativity hadn’t been challenged for sometime now?
How did he know that I have not felt the urge to write about anything since the experience in New York left me as empty as the giant hole left by the events of 9/11? With a president not elected by the majority, having destroyed what little faith I had left in this country; with a nation full of couch clones eager to believe the stupidest of lies from an obviously corrupt administration; upon seeing my home state of California – having been the last bastion of democracy in the U.S. – sabotaged by a right-wing-funded, bad acting, Nazi superhero, it has been difficult to muster any creativity to write, compose music, or enjoy any other artistic endeavor I normally peacefully pursue.

Who Owns The Army?
Clint Clark,
Are you under the assumption that the Army, Navy, Air force, and Marines, own the equipment that they use? Is the soldier who stands guard someplace in the world, under the illusion that the gun he has, belongs to him or to the military branch he is a member of? Unless he paid taxes at sometime, he cannot claim any ownership of that gun. The gun belongs to the taxpayers.

Why They Blame Us
Andy Trimlett,
While the 9/11 Commission Report covers, in excruciating detail, how the horrific acts of that day occurred and how our government failed to prevent them, it falls embarrassingly short in addressing one essential component of any criminal investigation: motive. The most glaring omission is the lack of any explanation of why al-Qaeda would cite U.S. policy toward Israel as a reason for launching attacks against us. The report leaves readers with no idea of the scale of human rights abuses committed by the Israeli government against the Palestinians, nor the extent to which the U.S. favors the Israelis over the Palestinians.
