May Day Versus Loyalty Day
Mary La Rosa,
May Day versus McCarthy era like "Loyalty Day" opened a UN Conference against Nuclear Weapons that seemed doomed by ambiguities and lack of reportage from its very start… including vagueUS intentions towards peace contrasted by recent trends and “nuclearised” weapons that support pre emptive strikes. Meanwhile, Israel still vague about possessing nuclear weapons adds to its crimes against humanity in the Occupied Territories by dumping its waste on someone else’s homeland.

Very Diverse Demonstrations in May
D. Burbeck,
Again last month, many people protested against military recruitment centers
on and off of college campuses.
There was a large march in Houston against Halliburton during it's annual
stock holder's meeting. There was a large cow with the map of Iraq on it's side
that a figure of Cheney was milking.
The First Lady Laura Bush was met with protesters in the Middle East.
A group of 823 people associated with Michigan's Calvin College took out a
full-page newspaper ad protesting President Bush's planned commencement
speech.
A protest was held to tell CACI "You're Not Welcome in San Francisco" On Monday, May 16th. A protest was held to launch a campaign to get CACI International to leave San Francisco. Campaign organizers say that CACI employees were involved in the torture scandal, and that the company provided many interrogators who worked at the Abu-Ghraib prison.
A war resister was convicted by the Navy but given a light sentence.
A "Tom Delay Carnival" was held in Wash. DC.
Mike Oden intends to walk from San Bernadino, California, where he began a journey last September that he hopes will culminate in New York City in front of the Statue of Liberty on August 14, 2005.
New Hampshire's Senator Judd Greg's Concord office saw demonstrators.
Activists at the University of Hawaii held the administration building, to demand the University cease all work on a secret Navy research project, UARC. This secret research is for the development of space-based laser systems, surveillance technologies, and sea-based mines.
.
Around the world, dozens of cities saw large protests after the Newsweek article citing two year old
news of abuse of the Koran at Guantanamo Bay.
And the most unusual - Steve and Lana Jacobs, members of the St. Francis Catholic Worker community that shelters the homeless and runs a local soup kitchen were arrested today by University of MIssouri police for digging graves on the lawn of the university's ROTC building.
The entire month's protests can be accessed here:

War Resister Delgado's San Diego Speech 5/20
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
War resister Aidan Delgado, who successfully got out of the Army as a conscientious objector but only after serving a full term of duty in Iraq, spoke in San Diego at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest May 20. He showed slides of his war experiences — including some documenting war crimes at Abu Ghraib besides the ones exposed in the mainstream media — and explained his differences with fellow resister Pablo Paredes, whom he came to San Diego to support but with whom he disagrees on whether the U.S. should withdraw immediately from Iraq.

Transcript of Anti-War Press Conf., 5/20/05
transcribed by Mark Gabrish Conlan,
Before Aidan Delgado, Iraq War veteran and conscientious objector, spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest May 20, he, law professor Marjorie Cohn and Fernando Suárez del Solár, who lost his son in the early days of the war, gave a press conference. Only two reporters attended. Cohn explained her case against the legality of the war and the astonishing statement the judge in Pablo Paredes' court-martial made after she testified: “I think that the government has successfully proved that any servicemember has reasonable cause to believe that the wars in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq are illegal.” Delgado defended his refusal to join most of the peace movement's call for immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

Filibuster Wars
RosaRL,
Filibuster Wars
Power Grab at the Height of the Empire
http://rwor.org/a/004/filibuster-wars.htm
The Senate was heading for a major showdown, as the Republican majority and Vice President Cheney conspired to strip the Democrat minority of their ability to even filibuster the most extreme judicial nominees.
Then, after playing chicken for two weeks, a "Gang of 14" Senators suddenly announced they had reached a "historic compromise based on mutual trust" -- and they announced that they had saved the Senate from destruction. And the media oohed-and-aaaahed over the last minute development.
But it quickly became pretty obvious, that nothing here was an obstacle to the most dangerous plans for remaking the courts.
And did the compromise "safe the filibuster" as the media said? In fact, the compromise said "If you don't take the filibuster, we promise not to use it." Which, if you think about it, gives the top reactionaries what they want.
Part of this "compromise" is that the Democrats immediately stopped their opposition to Precilla Owen and several other of Bush's judicial nominees -- these are people who are literally monsters of an extreme kind, who had been stalled in the Senate (in some cases for years.) So this "compromise" meant that these vultures are headed for powerful courts.
And, it is also clear that huge new showdowns lie just ahead -- as the White House and Senate brace for a struggle over putting extreme rightwing judges on the supreme court.
The following article (written just before the "compromise" was announced) lays bare the stakes and dynamics of this whole crisis.

Avakian on Mandates and liars

Revolution #3, May 22, 2005,
posted at revcom.us
Bush has no legitimate mandate. The will of the people was
not expressed in the 2004 election—not only because of
voter intimidation and fraud, which there definitely was some of,
but beyond all that, and most essentially, because the people
were not given a real choice. They were not given a real avenue
in which they could express their opposition to what is
represented by Bush. The real story of what is happening and the
alternative to it was never presented in the election—certainly
it was not presented by Kerry and the Democrats.

The Quagmire: As the Iraq War Drags On...
by Robert Dreyfuss via Rolling Stone,
The news from Iraq is bad and getting worse with each passing day. Iraqi insurgents are stepping up the pace of their attacks, unleashing eleven deadly bombings on April 29th alone. Many of the 150,000 Iraqi police and soldiers hastily trained by U.S. troops have deserted or joined the insurgents. The cost of the war now tops $192 billion, rising by $1 billion a week, and the corpses are piling up: Nearly 1,600 American soldiers and up to 100,000 Iraqi civilians are dead, as well as 177 allied troops and 229 private contractors.

Protest Tells CACI "You're Not Welcome in SF"
indybay.org,
On Monday, May 16th, a protest was held to launch a campaign to get CACI International to leave San Francisco. Campaign organizers say that CACI employees were involved in the Iraq torture scandals, and that the company provided many interrogators who worked at the Abu-Ghraib prison. CACI's vice president and other top executives were in San Francisco to make a presentation at an investors' conference at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in Union Square. Several people from the campaign to shut down CACI's San Francisco office attempted to meet with the CACI officials, but they were removed from the hotel.
