San Diego’s contribution to the international day of opposition to the U.S. war on Iraq on Saturday, September 24 was highly successful, with over 1,000 people participating in the afternoon rally at Sixth and Laurel in Balboa Park and the feeder marches that led to it. But the rally revealed some differences between members of the anti-war coalition that threaten its ability to hold together and reach out to the broader U.S. public, especially people who’ve decided that the war was a mistake in the first place but aren’t ready to support an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

Hundreds of thousands around the US protest war on September 24th September 24th: Hundreds of thousands of people protested the US war in Iraq and the lack of funding of people's needs such as disaster preparedness today. The protests took place on the same day as Hurricane Rita hit the state of Texas, bringing rains and strong winds to homes, oil rigs, and businesses. Indymedia radio stations came together for the monthly Critical Mass Radio Network broadcast. Radio stations conducted interviews about the protests, the war, and the two recent hurricane/evacuation disasters. They switched back and forth, carrying feeds from such locations as Michigan, Portland, New York, and San Francisco.

A firsthand account of the September 24th demonstration in downtown San Diego and in Balboa Park says, "There was quite a turnout of activists for today's demonstration against the war in Iraq and corporate hegemony. Compared to the massive protests in DC, it may be small, but it was one of the largest I've seen around here since the Second Anniversary protests on March 19th of this year." Read More here

Some 50,000 people rallied and marched in San Francisco. An Anti-Capitalist Convergence gathered at 16th and Mission and then marched along the sidewalks to Dolores Park, where it joined the main march. There was a rally at Dolores Park, which turned into a 12pm march and arrived at Jefferson Square Park for a 2pm rally. At the park, the windows of a corporate media van were smashed, and "Fuck the Corporate Media" was written on the van. Crowd sizes at protests around the country were larger than expected. 300,000 people surrounded the White House in Washington, DC. (Video) 50,000 people protested in Los Angeles. Twice as many people as were expected protested in Salinas, California. The anti-war movement has grown in the last two months as Cindy Sheehan has gotten national corporate media coverage of her attempt to talk with President Bush about why he went to war. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, polls have shown that for the first time since George Bush invaded Iraq in March of 2003, a majority of people in the United States now call for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from that country.

There was quite a turnout of activists for today's demonstration against the war in Iraq and corporate hegemony. Compared to the massive protests in DC, it may be small, but it was one of the largest I've seen around here since the Second Anniversary protests on March 19th of this year.

Iraq cannot wait for “pendulum swings.” Iraq cannot wait for possible resolutions to set “reasonable” deadlines for hypothetical timetables. Iraq cannot wait for the 2006 U.S. elections—especially (but not only) when the major Democrats all oppose withdrawal from Iraq, and some even support more troops being sent.

UK Troops Clash With Iraqi Police in Basra

Earlier, two British soldiers undercover in civilian clothing, allegedly planting a bomb were arrested in Basra after firing at Iraqi Police. The British began to negotiate for the soldiers' release, but this soon turned into fighting between UK forces and Basra police. British forces broke the prisoners out after storming the jail with tanks, despite attacks from rioting Basra residents. This article from the mainstream media, predictably, seems to focus more on the rioting than on the fact that UK forces were deliberately attacking their "allies".
