Great Political Plays at 6th @ Penn
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

6th @ Penn Theatre, 3704 Sixth Avenue in Hillcrest, is presenting on its so-called "off nights" (Sundays through Wednesdays) through November 16 an intense, profoundly moving program of plays united by the theme of inhumanity. The subjects of the plays include the genocides in Rwanda and Sudan, lingering anti-Jewish prejudice in America and the U.S. practice of "extraordinary rendition" — kidnapping terror suspects and flying them to countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt so they can be tortured. Their styles range from wrenching, realistic drama to circus-like satirical farce, but all four works combine a sense of political commitment with a passionate, artistically integral sense of drama.

Alive in Baghdad: Indymedia Reports from Iraq
Brian Conley of Boston Indymedia c/o sdimc,

Car bombing in Baghdad Here is the brief update. There is confusion over the number of casualties. The number reported by the US Military is nearly the same number we received from an Iraqi Police officer who was involved in firing on the second vehicle, which exploded near the Mosque in Firdos Square. He claimed there were approximately 4 killed and 16 wounded at that time.

The assertion that the attack was intended to take over the Hotel was not substantiated by any of the IPs or PSDs(private security) who we spoke with that were on the scene. He believed this attack to be similar to previous attacks, where the first bomb is intended to bring IPs and other security forces, and subsequent bombings are used to inflict mass casualties on the response teams.

Despite the loud gunfire long after the attack, no gunmen other than the IPs were reported to be in the streets. One BBC colleague reported to me that “The Iraqi Police tend to be quite trigger-happy.” Also, my fixer overheard an IP shouting “Be careful they are shooting everyone.” We now believe “they” almost certainly means other IPs, although we don’t have a first-hand report of IPs firing on each other.

There is still some confusion over the carbombings. We received an eyewitness report from a PSD that the first car was a Black Jeep Cherokee, it now appears this may have been the second vehicle, as the AP reports the first car was a white vehicle.

We will try to provide photos of the aftermath this evening.

Susan Skog: How to Have Peace in Our Lifetime
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

“Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.” This line from an old song could easily sum up Susan Skog’s presentation to the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest October 14 and the book she was promoting in her talk, Peace in Our Lifetime. The principle behind her book and her approach to peacemaking is that we must, as Mahatma Gandhi (whose grandson Arun was one of her interviewees) said, “be the change we wish to seek in the world” — that in order to be effective peacemakers we must first work through our own anger, hatred, fear and demonization of our presumed “enemies” so we can engage them on a common human level.

A Warning ?
Ben,

Where would we really find the principal danger to civil liberty in a republic? Not in the governors as governors, not in the governed as governed, but in the governed unequipped to function as governors. The chief enemies of republican freedom are mental sloth, conformity, bigotry, superstition, credulity, monopoly in the market of ideas, and utter, benighted ignorance. Footnote 1 to ADDERLEY v. FLORIDA, 385 U.S. 39 (1966), JUSTICE DOUGLAS, with whom THE CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE BRENNAN, and MR. JUSTICE FORTAS concur, dissenting.

Griffin Seals Case for WTC Demolition, Calls
Dr. Kevin Barrett, University of Wisconsin,

In two speeches to overflow crowds in New York last weekend, notable theologian David Ray Griffin argued that recently revealed evidence seals the case that the Twin Towers and WTC-7 were destroyed by controlled demolition with explosives. Despite the many enduring mysteries of the 9/11 attacks, Dr. Griffin concluded, "It is already possible to know, beyond a reasonable doubt, one very important thing: the destruction of the World Trade Center was an inside job, orchestrated by terrorists within our own government."

SDSU Activists Protest Military Recruiters
Jocelyn Blake,

The Campus Anti-war Network at San Diego State protested military recruiters on October 13th and refused to back down in the face of police intimidation.

Military recruiters occupied San Diego State University for three days this week. They put on an extravagant display with hummers, war simulation games, a rock climbing wall, and even propelled off of buildings and parachuted out of aircrafts. All of this was an attempt to project an image of the military as a hub of adventure and excitement. Our protest showed up to expose the reality of life in the military: war, discrimination, sexual harassment and unfulfilled promises of opportunity. 10 activists from the Campus Anti-war Network (CAN) and the International Socialist Organization surrounded the recruiters during one of their propelling stunts and demanded that the military leave our campus.

The Troops Don’t Support the Constitution
Jacob G. Hornberger ,

10/11/05 "Lewrockwell.com" -- --Every U.S. soldier takes an express and solemn oath to “support and defend the Constitution.” That oath, however, is a sham because the troops do not support or defend the Constitution. Instead, when it comes to war the troops follow another oath they take – to obey the orders of the president, and they do this without regard to whether such orders violate the Constitution.

Norman Solomon Speaks in San Diego
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Norman Solomon, columnist and head of the Institute for Public Accuracy (which attempts to get progressive voices featured in the mainstream media), spoke in San Diego September 29 at a benefit organized by Activist San Diego for the Guerrero Azteca Project of anti-war activist Fernando Suárez del Solár. Promoting and reading from his new book "War Made Easy," Solomon spoke mostly of the ease with which any determined President can build public support for a war he wants to wage, and how the corporate media help him through turning themselves into transmission belts for pro-war propaganda. The event raised $1,000 for Guerrero Azteca Project and its efforts to offer scholarships to young Latinos and other students of color to give them other ways to pay for college than by joining the military.

"The War Within" Explores a Terrorist's Mind
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

"The War Within," a new film opening October 7 at the Landmark Cinemas in Hillcrest, is a powerful, gripping drama about a would-be terrorist planning an attack in New York after three years being imprisoned and tortured in his native Pakistan. The film maintains a delicate balance, seeking to make us understand the central character's motives without making him so sympathetic as to condone his actions. The film's effectiveness is due to the skill of its creators — director Joseph Castelo and star Ayad Akhtar, who also co-wrote the script — in maintaining that balance and creating enough other characters to dramatize the central character's "roads not taken" and leave open the hope that he'll abandon his terrorist plans.
