The First Principle of Political Activism is
Lionel Lynn,
Becoming a political “activist” does not primarily mean protesting against something. Rather, at least one primary aspect of becoming an activist, is becoming “aware” of what is going on in the world—but also becoming aware of what is going on within oneself (in respect to what is perceived to be going on everywhere else).

Goodbye, Privacy and Freedom
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
The revelation that the Bush administration subpoenaed four Internet search engines — Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL and Google — demanding records of the Net searches made by one million clients for one week, and the fact that all these companies except Google complied, is just the latest in the current administration's relentless assault on the very idea of a right to privacy. Coupled with the administration's blatant flouting of the law in ordering wiretaps on U.S. citizens, and the likelihood that Americans will accept this latest invasion of their privacy as necessary to fight the "war on terror" successfully, these are just further steps in the abolition of America's constitutional republic and its replacement with a neo-fascist Presidential dictatorship.

CLAYTON HALLMARK,
What government besides the military dictatorship of Pakistan would permit a potshot bombing of occupied houses to get a criminal (much less by a foreign country)? Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden's "Cheney," was not among those killed in the CIA drone attack of Friday the Thirteenth of January 2006 in Pakistan. The Pakistani government is protesting, or whatever. But what about European countries and their protests against CIA kidnappings, torture flights, and gulags on their soil? Their governments, and many of their people, don't care either, we show here.

Students Being Paid to Monitor Professors
Indymedia onCampus,
We received this via email today: As you may have already heard, Rob Watson, Rafael Perez-Torres and I are currently listed on the website of UCLAprofs.com, a venture of the Bruin Alumni Association, on whose board serve, among others, CA State Senator Bill Morrow (of San Diego, who introduced SB5, the so-called student bill of rights, into the CA Senate) and our erstwhile colleague Leila Beckwith. Rob and Rafael will have to check for themselves, of course, but my "dossier" at this organization includes utterly false, misleading, distorted as well as libelous claims (e.g., that I am a "vicious anti-Semite.").
The organization actively encourages UCLA students to spy on the currently blacklisted faculty, as well as on a separate list of "targeted faculty" which includes Arthur Little, Stephen Yenser and Jonathan Post. They offer, for example, cash for recordings of class lectures, lecture notes, etc. See below.
I'm writing to see if there's anything that can be done to protect
what remains of academic freedom at our university.

Over 100 Students Stage Die-In for Darfur
lotu5 for indymedia oncampus,
UPDATE 1:39PM: Regents vote yes to create a committee to consider divestment
Over 100 UCSD and UCLA students staged a die-in today at the Price Center, a central area for campus traffic, to urge the UC Regents to divest from Darfur. The UC Regents are meeting at UCSD today to decide on whether or not to divest from Darfur. A race-based genocide is going on in Darfur, and over 400,000 have died as a result. As students and a TV crew looked on, the students held signs about divestment from Darfur and one person spoke about why they were holding the die-in. The regents meeting will be taking place today from 10:30am to 2pm at UCSD and students will be attending the meeting.

Drown Out Bush's State of Union-Jan 31-4:30pm
posted by Pipard,
BUSH STEP DOWN NOW RALLY! "Drive Out the Bush Regime"! State of the Union/State of Emergency Rally!! January 31st Rally at 4:30pm, Horton Plaza, Broadway Side. At 6pm as Bush speaks we will "Drown out the Bush Regime"! Bring lots of "Noise"! Sponsored by "WorldCantWait.org" info: (619)944-6786
The future is on the line and you are in the right place. The world urgently needs us to drive out the Bush regime. To this end, the world needs powerful protest by the American people - nation-wide on Tuesday, January 31st to drown out and denounce Bush’s State of the Union, declaring BUSH STEP DOWN because we are in a state of emergency, and then the following Saturday bringing this demand right to the seat of government, to the seat of power, in Washington DC: BUSH STEP DOWN AND TAKE YOUR PROGRAM WITH YOU.
If ever there was a time for people to pour into the streets, if ever there was a moment that demanded the uncompromised resolve of many thousands soon swelling to millions, if ever there was a moment ripe for regime change – we are living through it.
This is the responsibility that all of us have. It is not every day that people live through the types of events around which history pivots – events that are celebrated or grieved in the history books, legends and songs.

"UC Senior Vice President of Business & Finance, Joe Mullinix, will present options for Sudan divestment to the UC Board of Regents on January 19, 2006, followed by a vote on those options by the Regents. This vote marks an historic response from the UC, who have only formally considered divestment twice in its history, and follows a growing nationwide movement of sucessful and ongoing divestment campaigns."
Support the UC in Stopping Genocide - In response to conflict with Darfurian rebel groups in February 2003, the Sudanese government, working with Arab militias called "janjaweed", began sponsoring wholesale ethnic cleansing of black Darfurians, almost all of whom had NO affiliation with the rebel groups.
- The Death Toll has reached up to 400,000 people since February 2003
- More than 2,500,000 people have been driven from their homes

Osama Bin Laden in His Own Words
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Attorney Randall Hamud spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest January 11 on his new book, "Osama bin Laden: America's Enemy in His Own Words." The book consists of 20 statements by bin Laden with prefaces and summaries by Hamud and footnotes to explain the historical references bin Laden made. The excerpts were translated by scholars who chose to remain anonymous because their ability to fly back and forth from the U.S. to their families in the Middle East might be jeopardized if their connection with this project became known. In his talk, Hamud said that virtually everything the U.S. has done in the so-called "war on terror," from declaring it a "crusade" to invading Iraq, has played into bin Laden's hands and increased his popular appeal among Arabs and Muslims worldwide.

Push For Peace - Disabled Vets Wishing to Pro
reposted,
Push For Peace is a collective of veterans, progressive activists, and everyday citizens working together through education, motivation, and truth to bring America’s troops home from this illegal war in Iraq and to help bring healing and peace to our nation. It began with an idea by a wheelchair-bound, Vietnam veteran named Buddy, whose genuine concern over this preemptive war of choice in Iraq, and his tireless persistence, captured the interest of two Northwest activists to take the challenge.
There are many home-bound, or otherwise disabled, American citizens and veterans that have been unable to participate in past marches supporting the peace message. The Push For Peace movement is geared to combine the efforts of able-bodied activists to those with special needs or challenges, so that all people can participate and be counted. The Push For Peace effort will include organized rallies and marches, as well as appearances and performances by high-profile speakers and entertainers, to rally the American people and show them we stand united with our fellow citizen and soldier.
It is our goal to grow the base of participants each day resulting in a cross-country Push culminating at the gates of the White House on July 4, 2006. Events will be scheduled across the country leading up to the big Push in July. So keep checking the Push calendar for events near you.
If you do not see events scheduled for your area and would like the Push For Peace to "push" through your state, please contact us for more information:

Salvadoran Refugee Tells His Story … Again
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Oskar Torres, actor and screenwriter whose remarkable personal story formed the basis of the film "Innocent Voices," came to San Diego December 30 to introduce the film at a showing sponsored by Activist San Diego to raise money for Salvadoran textile workers. The film tells the story of Chava, an 11-year-old boy growing up in El Salvador during that country's civil war in the 1980's and trying to avoid being kidnapped and forced to serve in the U.S.-backed military against a popular armed struggle.
