Queers in Iran
Mitra Roshan, Kourosh Shemirani repost znet,

The July 19 actions marking the anniversary of the execution of two young men in Mashad, Iran, have initiated an important discussion about the role Western LGBT activists can play in relation to persecuted minorities around the world. We feel the July 19 actions were fundamentally flawed and showed a dangerous trend in LGBT politics, which could lead to a counterproductive, if not outright destructive, situation for sexual minorities in Iran and other countries.

Much as in the U.S., the protection of sexual minorities is fundamentally a cultural issue that must be addressed through personal experiences and public debates that draw on values important to the entire community. Iranians are already engaged in these debates.

We must come to terms with the fact that we are limited in our ability to effect positive change in the rest of the world. This is the price we pay for living under the shadows of George Bush's America and a history of Western domination, as our actions are always implicated in our nation's global power.

San Diegans Say No to US/Israeli Aggression
queer-j brad,

About 300 protesters met in San Diego's Balboa Park on Saturday for a combined march and rally to express opposition to the criminal US/Israeli aggression occupation in Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq. The mood of the demonstrators and speakers spanned outrage at the continuing atrocities and human rights violations, celebration of the effective resistance of Hezbollah, and contemplation of what will be required to right the wrongs. The overly long rally sapped energy from the crowd, but this was compensated somewhat by the sprinkling of gems throughout the speeches, especially the reading of the poem "Intifada" by Professor of Languages and Humanities at Southwestern College, Steve Kowit. A handful of counter-protesters parroted the elite/right-wing pundit/corporate media line. A 16-1/2 min video captures some of the highlights of the protest, as i experienced them.

Here is a larger frame version of the video

Remember the Hunger Strikers: Continue the Fight for Freedom
Janice Jordan - Peace and Feedom Party Candidate for Governor,

Janice Jordan, Gerry Adams and Jean Day in Belfast I returned last week from an eight day trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Every year the month of August in Belfast is filled with street festivals in many of the city's communities. This year is especially active, because 2006 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Ten Irishmen who gave their lives in the name of Irish freedom! The history of Irish liberation is a part of every day life. Support for the people of Palestine and Lebanon was visible in the pubs, on the streets and in the music halls. Recognizing and acting on the struggles of occupied and oppressed people around the world is something the Irish do without effort.

Tracing the Trail of Destruction in Lebanon
Walden Bello*,

BEIRUT, Lebanon - The wounds of war were evident shortly after we crossed the Syria-Lebanon border at 1130 in the morning on August 12. At Haissa, about three kilometers from the Dabboussiyeh border crossing, we come across the ruins of a bridge hit by Israeli war planes just the day before. Villagers tell us 12 people were killed and 10 wounded, all civilians.

Israeli/US Aggression and Occupation in Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq: Teach-In
queer-j brad,

N. Barghouti, D. Bittar, F. Abdel-Nour, N. Keilani, M. Cohn and J. Graubart The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee of San Diego sponsored a teach-in on July 27 to provide background to the recent attack on Lebanon, the escalation of attacks on Gaza, and the continuing occupation of Palestine, Iraq and now southern Lebanon. Six speakers discussed the historical and political context, the resistance, the human experience of occupation, and international law: Nasser Barghouti (moderator), Doris Bittar, Farid Abdel-Nour, Nadia Keilani, Marjorie Cohn and Jonathan Graubart. Audio Duration: 1:38:40, with partial transcript. A question and answer period followed. Audio Duration: 1:03:40.

"Imagine if the I-5 was bombed and I-805 and the I-15 and the depots of fuels and half of the gas stations of San Diego were bombed. Then imagine if one third of our hospitals had been destroyed. We have no electricity, no water and 800,000 of San Diego residents were forced to flee, go somewhere, inland maybe. Then you would get to understand the situation in Lebanon."

"As an artist, I have gathered many photo essays that document how individuals resist, often through creative acts, like Haldia at the Bourj al Barajneh refugee camp in Beirut, whose camp now is surrounded by rubble, built her entire home with mortar, cinder blocks, and river rocks from Nabitieh... There are many forms of resistance, and all can be legitimate... For the ordinary person, Hamas and Hezbollah crush the walls of a demented and bigoted logic, whatever else you agree or disagree about their philosophy."

"Stability has historically has been usually brought about by barbarism and brutality...The reason Middle East politics is so complicated is that is usually hanging by thin delicate threads that connect different communities with each other... The reason the Middle East is unstable is that there hasn't been that kind of brutality in its history... I'm afraid that this administration takes this cruel truth not as reminder not to overvalue stability, not as a reminder of how cruel it is to merely pursue it. They take it as a prescription for what to do."

Prior to 1991, our first attempt to destroy Iraq, Iraqi women had equality in education and health care. They had the most progressive human rights in the region and they were the first Arab women to hold high positions in academia, government and law. Before the US invasion, they constituted 40% of the public sector work force and they made up 20% of Iraq's Parliament. In the U.S. Congress, only 15% of it is made up of women... Today an Iraqi woman walking alone in the street is asking to be killed, raped or kidnapped... I asked Iraqis if they had a message for the American people. None of their messages was without an expletive..."

"Bush could stop Israel in its tracks with a snap of his fingers. But why would he? Israel is doing his bidding. Redrawing the map of the Middle East to facilitate U.S. domination. Bush began that task with Iraq, and Israel is following suit with Palestine and Lebanon... The United States loyal and consistent support for Israel's policies to the tune of more than 3 billion dollars in aid per year has enabled Israel government to conduct a war of terror against the Palestinian and Lebanese people."

"These can be subject to great debate in the specifics, but a number of the Israeli actions defy any sort of debate. Certainly collective punishments, which is a pretty explicit effort to impose massive desperate conditions on the civilian population until they give in, is no question illegal. Certainly causing massive displacements, the attack on the power plants, even the United Nations, which is fairly diplomatic about this, has called these war crimes."

"About forty years ago, 1967, in six days the Israeli army destroyed the armies of Egypt, Syria and Jordan, occupied all of the Sinai strip, the Golan Heights, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, killed thousands of soldiers in those Arab armies, all in six days. Today after 14 days of punishing bombardment of Lebanon, the Israeli army has not been able to progress more than 10 km into Lebanon."

Letters from Lebanon: The Proximity of Death
Barucha Peller for Fault Lines, Indybay paper,

Death is close here. And some of us are not as close to death as
others. The south of Lebanon is cut off from humanitarian aid. Here
on the north side of the Litani River, the people in the south,
taking the worse of the missiles and mortars of the Israel
aggression, are always on our minds. there are whispers in the back
of our thoughts: "How long do they have? How can we possibily get to
them?"

Imperial Presidency Rebuked by ABA
Kenneth J. Theisen,

On January 24, 2006, the American Bar Association (ABA) issued a press release stating that, “Presidential signing statements that assert President Bush’s authority to disregard or decline to enforce laws adopted by Congress undermine the rule of law and our constitutional system of separation of powers…” The press release was publicizing a report by a blue-ribbon ABA task force which was created in June 2006 to examine the “changing role of presidential signing statements” under the Bush administration. On August 8, 2006, the ABA’s House of Delegates overwhelmingly approved the report by voting to call on President Bush and future presidents not to issue signing statements that claim the power to bypass laws, and it called on Congress to pass legislation to outlaw the practice.

Civilian Resistance in Lebanon
SDIMC 101,

Protest in Beirut Leaving from Martyr's Square in Beiruit, Lebanon on Sat Aug 12 7AM local time, a civilian convoy is to bring supplies such as medicine, food, water to beleagured civilians in the south who are being victimized by the bombing of Lebanon. This movement is being started because no one else, nation or international body, is acting to help these people. By spreading word on the convoy, this will draw international attention to Israel's reaction to the convoy as they risk being shelled en route. Subsequent actions will culminate in an August 19 civilian march to reclaim the South.

UPDATE
radioActive sanDiego's dj lotu5 interviews Ali from lebanonsolidarity.org, who is currently in Beiruit and is about to embark Saturday morning on a civil caravan to the south of lebanon to take supplies like food and water.

Bay Area Queers: Cancel World Pride
QUIT! Palestine,

QUIT! (Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism) condemns the decision by Jerusalem Open House and other promoters of World Pride Jerusalem to go ahead with the planned week of international pride events scheduled for August 6-12, despite Israel's ongoing assault on civilian communities in Lebanon and Gaza.

"While members of the Lebanese queer group Helem are turning their community center into a shelter for refugees, their counterparts in Jerusalem are preparing for a film festival and beach party," said QUIT member Kate Raphael. "What is the message that this sends to the world about what our community cares about?" "Instead of being visible in Jerusalem, partying during an ethnic cleansing, we must be visible in the movements in our home countries calling for freedom and justice for all people."

Euro-Judeo-Christianity
Tony Ryals,

But the historians and governments story-don't believe
them-they lied,
Just blame it on their pseudo-Christian pride,
Because the Christians and Allies who won the war,
Rewrote history to separate Christianity from the Nazi horror,
They'll tell you the Nazis weren't Christians,
That they worshipped astrology and Norse pagan religions,
This should upset many modern Germans,
Who must still pay taxes for their Christian sermons,
