Oaxaca Update
sdimc volunteer,

danielsan / santa cruz imc The Mexican Federal Preventative Police (PFP) continues to occupy parts of Oaxaca City following an invasion on Sunday, which Vincente Fox has claimed was triggered by the need to restore order following PRI paramilitary killings on Friday. Despite calls from federal legislators, including those of his own PRI, Ulises Ruiz Ortiz has refused to resign. The People of Oaxaca continue to resist, retaining barriers at some locations in the city and attempting to displace the PFP nonviolently.

The Zapatistas have called for solidarity blockades today, November 1, and a general strike on November 20 (espanol, english). Protests have taken place at over 20 Mexican embassies and consulates in the US.

The Oaxaca Solidarity Camp has continuously occupied the sidewalk outside the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy since Sunday evening, and the shifting camp population, drawn from autonomous collectives and groups in the region, has vowed to remain until the occupying forces are withdrawn from Oaxaca.

Over the past several years, Little Italy has been swept clear of real people through a combination of gentrification, cops and private security forces. It now provides a lifeless, sterile concrete, steel and glass environment for its largely atomized, over-consuming zombie inhabitants.

The Camp has brought to this barren a feeling of warmth and community, with singing, chanting, pot banging, signs, candles and a Dia de los Muertos altar. The Consul has been visibly disturbed by the Camp's display of power from below. The sdpd has detained three protesters apparently for having the gall to occupy three-dimensional space, as no legal reason could be discerned by videotaping observers.

The Oaxaca Solidarity Camp continues, as does the electronic blockade of Mexican Consulates and Embassies in North America.

SOLIDARITY WITH OAXACA
MLCP,

The uprising of the Oaxacan people continues on its 158th day. It started with a strike of the teachers on 22 May and continued with the occupation of the provincial institutions, expulsion of the local state forces of the province, formation of the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca (APPO) and turning of it into the organ of local power.
The attacks, imprisonments and massacres of the police forces of the federal state and the province are not able to stop the resistance in Oaxaca.

Mexican Federal Forces Attacking Demonstrators and Retaking Oaxaca City; Protests at the Mexican Consulate; Electronic Protest
sdimc volunteer,

On Friday, armed paramilitaries attacked a barricade of The Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), killing NYC Indymedia reporter Brad Will and injuring photographer Oswaldo Ramírez of the daily Milenio. Video footage from Will's camera was used to identify the attackers, Abel Santiago Zárate and Juan Carlos Soriano Velasco from the local police and PRI politicians Manuel Aguilar and Pedro Carmona (Will's assassin). In a separate incident later in the day, Oaxacan schoolteacher Emilio Alfonso Fabián and resident Esteban López Zurita were killed. In paramilitary attacks on friday, a total of four people were murdered, thirty wounded and several abducted.

Vincente Fox, President of Mexico, has used the paramilitary attacks organized by his PRI partners as a pretext for sending the Federal Preventative Police (PFP) to Oaxaca to suppress the five month APPO resistance movement, which has occupied sections of the central city and government buildings, demanding the resignation of the corrupt PRI governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, the release of political prisoners and the end of repression in Oaxaca.

Radio APPO (english translation) and Narco News are reporting that the PFP has advanced through Oaxaca City into the city center, removing barricades and reoccupying government buildings, including city hall. APPO has requested nonviolent resistance only. Violent attacks on government forces by provocateurs have been reported.

Former Israeli and Palestinian Fighters Tour
Between the Lines' Melinda Tuhus,

Former Israeli and Palestinian Fighters Tour U.S. to Promote Peace

Excerpts of talk by former Palestinian fighter Sulaiman Khatib, and cofounder of Combatants for Peace and former Israeli Air Force Reserves Capt. Yonatan Shapira, produced by Melinda Tuhus

As Palestinians continue to suffer and die under the policies of the Israeli government in Gaza and the West Bank, and as Israelis still suffer under the threat of suicide bombings, a group of former fighters from both sides have come together to put their own experience and suffering on the line to call for a non-violent solution to the decades-long Middle East conflict. The war veterans propose the creation of a viable Palestinian state to exist alongside Israel.

Two members of the group, Combatants for Peace, are currently on a speaking tour of the U.S. from Oct. 23 through Nov. 3, sponsored nationally by Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace. Their second stop was Yale University, where they told their stories and then invited questions.

Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus recorded the event and presents excerpts of their stories. We first hear from Sulaiman Khatib, a former Palestinian fighter, followed by Yonatan Shapira, a former captain in the Israeli Air Force Reserves and co-founder of Combatants for Peace.

Khatib and Shapira will be touring college campuses in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast through Nov. 3rd. For more information, visit the group's website at www.combatantsforpeace.org.

Senator Barbara Boxer Speaks @ Claire de Lune
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Senator Barbara Boxer U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer spoke at Claire de Lune coffeehouse in North Park October 18 to promote the paperback publication of her novel, "A Time to Run," but most of the questions she got were about politics and the future of the country and the Democratic party. Her response to speculations about future elections was simple: forget about anything past November 7, 2006 and make sure to register, vote and maximize the turnout of Democrats to take back the House and Senate.

Cygnet's "Bug": Paranoia Loves Company
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

John DeCarlo (photo: Randy Rovang) Tracy Letts' play "Bug," playing at Cygnet Theatre until November 12, is a dark fantasy about paranoia, human experimentation, the U.S. military and the way it permanently damages the people who fight its wars, sex, drugs and life among the lumpenproletariat. Well written, staged by Cygnet artistic director Sean Murray and acted by an excellent cast, "Bug" is well worth seeing.

For U.S. Voters - the Israel Lobby & Iran
“Why Would the U.S. Attack Iran?”,

While the Israel-First crowd isn't the only group that has called for attacking Iran, they are the primary ones doing so today. The more pragmatic imperialist camp - though certainly wanting to see Iran internationally isolated & advocating for "regime change" - have pretty much dropped the rhetoric about direct military assault since it as become clear that we really don't have the means to make such an attack serve U.S. interests. Only the Israel-First crowd -spearheaded by Israelis (like Olmert & Netanyahu), but strongly backed by their allies here - are still blatantly threatening military action. This has become especially true since entering election season - a new war is NOT a good sell.  http://www.whyattackiran.com/

No to Angelides and Schwarzenegger!
Steven Argue ,

Chicano Park demonstration Angelides criticized Schwarzenegger for his praise for the racist anti-immigrant vigilantes called the “Minutemen” while in the same breath calling for a "guest worker" program that would create a new class of super-exploited worker with no political rights. Under the same type of program in the past U.S. bosses often failed to even pay Mexican workers for their hard labor. The fact that Angelides and the Democrat Party are now calling for this kind of legalization of indentured servitude place them firmly in the same racist camp as Schwarzenegger.
