Mike Davis on Slums
queer-j brad,
On May 11 in International House's Great Hall at UCSD, urbanist, author and Professor of History at UC Irvine Mike Davis spoke to an audience of about 200 people about slums. Citing the UN-Habitat report, "The Challenge of Slums," Davis outlined the tragic facts about slums, including 1 billion current slum dwellers, an overlapping 1 billion people with no formal connection to their national or the global economy, and 2-3 billion people over the next half century most likely destined for slums. Summarizing his recent book, "Planet of Slums," Davis argued that slum expansion has reached a limit - an absence of free squatable land and the declining ability of slum dwellers to occupy survival niches has given rise to sectarian violence, child abandonment and other rational responses to desperate circumstances. He concluded with the hopeful picture of slums as incubators for burgeoning resistance movements.

A Warning ?
Ben,
Where would we really find the principal danger to civil liberty in a republic? Not in the governors as governors, not in the governed as governed, but in the governed unequipped to function as governors. The chief enemies of republican freedom are mental sloth, conformity, bigotry, superstition, credulity, monopoly in the market of ideas, and utter, benighted ignorance. Footnote 1 to ADDERLEY v. FLORIDA, 385 U.S. 39 (1966), JUSTICE DOUGLAS, with whom THE CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE BRENNAN, and MR. JUSTICE FORTAS concur, dissenting.

Corporate America now opposes 'free trade'
bruce,
During the debate over the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the American public heard Corporate America and the Washington, D.C. Establishment extol the virtues of so-called "free" trade. And the mainstream media were complicit by not providing the public with the information needed for rational discourse.

Breaking Border Paradigms
Bob Alba w/sdimc,
Calexico had many successes Saturday and early Sunday morning. According to the public and most major news sources, the human rights protestors have effectively shut down or delayed the Friends of the Border Patrol (FBP) from inaugurating their fall vigilante watch. Here are some pictures from one of the insipiring parts of the day as we broke down Border paradigms.

America Is Bankrupt
Mike (in Tokyo) Rogers,
09/12/05 "Lewrockwell" -- -- A recent trip to the United States – after a three-year absence – showed me how far the country and its people have deteriorated in a short period of time. Americans are bankrupt. They are bankrupt at every possible level: spiritually, morally, educationally. The country’s economy has deteriorated to the level of a Philippines or a Thailand (and I mean no disrespect to the Philippines or Thailand – I love those places).

A Call For Solidarity
David Agranoff,
David mailed me this statement asking for solidarity and asked that I post it on IndyMedia. There are only a few spelling errors/typos in David's letter because he had to write this in a bit of a hurry, but I will try to make them coherent while keeping as much of David's writing in it's original form as possible. Hopefully I don't add my own typos as I type this out.

Time to Go for the WTO
Kurt Williamsen,
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an entity that was created under the guise of promoting free trade internationally, but which in actuality is a group of foreign bureaucrats who regulate trade. And the trade policies it regulates are intentionally vague so that member countries really only know what is allowable when one member country contests another country's trade policy and the bureaucrats at the WTO make a ruling

Bush Loses It in New Hampshire Sept. 20
"President" George W. Bush,
This transcript of President Bush's town-hall meeting in New Hampshire September 20 (edited and posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan) shows how utterly incoherent he is without the crutch of a prepared text. The most revealing part is his fascinating misstatement of his Iraq policy: "We’re working with the international partners, we’re training Iraqi troops, we’re reconstructing the — reconstructing the company" — a perfect illustration of how totally Bush equates lassiez-faire, dog-eat-dog capitalism with "democracy."

WAR PRESIDENT---MY ASS!!!

Racicot was quoted as " Senator Kerry crossed a grave line when he dared to suggest the replacement of America 's commander-in- chief at a time when America is at war," while implying that Kerry was a traitorous renegade.
