Each year, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Congregation Dor Hadash dedicates the Sunday before the holiday as the MLK Community Learning Day. The activities are in recognition of Dr. King’s power and passion for the use of nonviolence as the catalyst for social change. This year, we have selected local issues that help the congregation identify with the social injustice of the economy, hunger, and the quest for freedom and equality among all people.
Congressman, Bob Filner, a 1961 Freedom Rider will give the keynote as we join him on that Greyhound Bus towards freedom. Learning sessions continue throughout the morning with the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice 100th Anniversary for Freedom of Speech, DSA's Occupy San Diego as visual image of the 99%, a Canstruction activity with the Hand Up Youth Pantry from Jewish Family Services, and the Center for Community Solutions.
The Shir Hadash Music group directed by Ely Freedman will lead the community in song, We Shall Overcome, If I Had a Hammer, and Imagine.
The NewYorkOnRye food truck will be on hand for a little fundraising.
