Peace and Dignity Journeys 2012: Dedicated to the Water

SD Peace and Dignity Journeys

"You talk to old people in these communities, and they laugh: 'never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would have to buy water in a bottle.'"

Peace and Dignity Journeys, a native journey starting in Tierra del Fuego and Alaska, running through hundreds of indigenous communities and meeting in the center of the continent, will be honoring water during the journey across the continent in 2012. The Journeys, conducted every four years since 1992 as a alternative to 'celebrations' of the 500th anniversary of the 'discovery' of the continent, are a fulfillment of the prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor that envisions the reunitement of peoples of the North and the South of Turtle Island.

The San Diego area communities actively participate in the organization of the run, having contributed five core runners in 2008. San Diego runners Gaby, Oscar and Sheritptah discussed the prophecy, the history of Peace and Dignity Journeys, their personal experiences during the 2008 run, traditions and ancestors, the passage of the run through San Diego, and womyn and midwives in Native communities on SD Indymedia Radio: Live from the City Heights Farmers Market on July 17.
