On July 12, a fundraiser will take place at the World Beat Center to help support runners on the Peace and Dignity Journey, an intercontinental spiritual run that began in Alaska and Tierra del Fuego in May, is passing through hundreds of indigenous communities, and will meet at the Panama Canal in November. The goals of the journey include strengthening and sharing indigenous culture, uniting indigenous peoples, and uniting all peoples -- thereby fulfilling the prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor.

Five of the core runners, those who are running the entire route, are from San Diego. One strand of the Northern route will join a feeder run arriving from the Mexico-US border in Balboa Park between the World Beat Center and the Centro Cultural de la Raza on July 23. From there, the runners will proceed along with community members to Chican@ Park for a public welcoming ceremony, arriving shortly after 5pm.

The fundraiser will feature performers who are immersed in or supportive of indigenous culture in the border region, as well as speakers discussing their experiences as runners in past Peace and Dignity Journeys.

Why is this on a Northern California calendar?

This is clearly not the kind of event meant to attract people living 500 miles (800 km) away! I've been to two such major events in San Diego/Tijuana (BorderHack and an anti-FTAA gathering, both in 2001), but none of the events taking place in SD that have been posted here recently are of that nature.

In other words, please don't SPAM this calendar!

The announcement is posted for the SDIMC Calendar. When you view the indybay calendar, you will see the event has the following tags:
San Diego | Arts + Action | Racial Justice

I could see the "San Diego" tag, but the more items there are on the calendar page, the more time it takes to find events that one can actually attend if one lives in the Bay Area. I feel almost the same about Santa Cruz events as about San Diego events.

Perhaps if the user interface were modified to allow the user to filter for multiple areas so that, for example, I could filter to allow through San Francisco, East Bay and Marin events as well as those that are meant for the entire state, country or world, listings from other areas wouldn't be a problem.

But, given that there's no overlap between the audience areas for San Diego events and Bay Area events, it would be perhaps more sensible for the indybay software people to just use their existing software to run a separate San Diego site on their server. (Major events of supra-local interest could be posted on multiple calendars.)

BTW, I have fond memories of the World Beat Center. It's where I first saw and heard the Prince Myshkins, when they were on a double bill with Charlie King.
