Beyond Kozol, Toward a School Action Plan
Dr Rich Gibson,
These are harsh times. The economy grinds down and the wars bomb on. In such an era, people define themselves by their actions. Often, there is no reversing the action taken, as a wounded economy and a desperate empire at war have no forgiveness.
This is especially true for educators, school workers, who face the militarization of schooling and the regimentation of what is taught, what kids come to know and how they come to know it, through curricula regulations noosed by high stakes exams. Every educator now faces questions like, “Why am I here? Whose interests are being served? What shall I do?”
Jonathan Kozol was an early inspiration for me and thousands of others, even though he quit as a teacher very early on. Now, he has issued an “Education Manifesto.” His plan of action for educators is a false flag rooted in wrong premises about the nature of education, society, and the possibilities of action for social change. Educators and activists need to get beyond Kozol with a concrete analysis of capitalist schools.

UCSD Students Confront Vice Chancellor
dj lotu5,
On thursday, June 12th, over 75 students met for a very quickly organized meeting to respond to UCSD's proposed change to their free speech policy. Vice-Chancellor Watson sent out an email with a proposed change to UCSD's policy on speech, literature and demonstrations, changing the policy from a one page document to a 19 page document including free speech zones, restrictions on political speech by faculty and staff and administration approval requirements for demonstrations.

UCSD Attempts to Stifle Student Free Speech With Policy Change
concerned student,
The UCSD administration is trying to change their policies on "Speech, Advocacy and Distribution of Literature", asking for public comment between now and june 25th, of course, finals week and a week in the summer, right after graduation, to ensure that no one will comment. PLEASE review this and comment!
The document says that any demonstrations of 10 or more people require a permit, that they must be 25 feet from the doors of any administration buildings, that amplified sound can only occur between 11am-1pm and 5pm-7pm.
The most egregious part of this is that it says that UCSD employees, TA's and faculty, must not express their political views on campus.
This is obviously in response to the rallies of the last few weeks where TA's, students and faculty have all come out to criticize the school for the firing of two TA's for political reasons, regardless of their teaching abilities.

The Explanation We Never Heard: Shiraz Dossa
Ytzhak,
Six months after attending a controversial Tehran conference, a Canadian professor charges the media and his own university with ignorance and intolerance."... I have never denied the Holocaust, only noted its propaganda power. Yet my university tolerated this assault on me. I was stunned by the university’s illiteracy and bias. I was appalled by President Sean Riley’s attack on my reputation and his spurious comments on the conference. In his December 13, 2006, statement he insinuated that the “conference” was bogus and that it revealed a “deplorable anti-Semitism” that the “St. FX community” found “deeply abhorrent” and contrary to its “traditions.” Riley left little doubt that I was guilty of sullying my school’s reputation. ..." -- prof. shiraz dossa

Spartacist League Says Don't Run Minutemen Of
The Internationalist,
Accompanying state repression against immigrants in post-9/11 America, racist vigilantes have escalated violent anti-immigrant attacks. The most prominent of these sinister groups is the so-called Minuteman Project which has staged armed "border patrols" hunting "illegal aliens" along the Mexican border. We have warned: "The Minutemen are shot through with fascist outfits.... These are not just racist bigots: they are armed and dangerous." Last October Minuteman founder Gilchrist fled the stage when student protesters unfurled a banner defending immigrant rights. Now the Spartacist League says students should not "disrupt" or shut down Minuteman events on campus. The SL pretends these racist vigilantes are not fascist, only "fascistic," and denies that they advocate or carry out deadly violence against the oppressed. The SL's whitewash of the racist vigilantes is a repudiation of Trotskyism and its own past actions, and an act of sabotage of the struggle to defend immigrants against government and vigilante terror. The Internationalist Group calls for organized immigrant/worker defense to sweep away these deadly immigrant hunters.

About the No Border Camp (from the no border camp zine (pdf) | español): As long as the US/Mexico border has existed, people have been struggling against it. It is a highly militarized, violent boundary marking an internal space of strict migration controls while allowing for unrestricted movement of capital and wealth. This border exists in a global context of apartheid borders, restriction of movement, and the division of indigenous peoples. For years around the world people have been tearing down fences, freeing detainees and fighting for the rights of migrant people. A global movement is rising. One of the many tactics in this movement is the no border camp – a space for direct action and community.
About the No Border Camp (from deletetheborder): The camp is intended to be a spectacular intervention in a discourse that at times ignores, and at other times justifies, the systematic violence, indignity and exploitation experienced by migrants in this country. The mobilization will bring many of us together in one place to share and learn. It is of equal importance to us that this not be just one isolated event that lasts a few days in one specific location. We view this mobilization as a process. It is a process of creating an anti-capitalist network for freedom of movement. For this mobilization to be a success, groups and individuals from a diversity of locales and experiences must make this project their own. We hope that others see this as an opportunity to build a platform from which this struggle can be demonstrated and articulated.

Clowns Recruiting at UCSD Art Show!
General Giggles,
On April 6th, 2007, the Boredom Patrol of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army set up a recruiting booth at UCSD's Open Studios gallery show. They recruited new clowns, uncovered the racism at UCSD and prettied up the gallery.
From the recruiting brochure: We, the Boredom Patrol of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army (CIRCA) are here at UCSD to recruit for our army. We see that there is already so much recruiting on campus: army, navy, police forces, sheriffs and our competition, the Border Patrol! Also, we see that UCSD is truly a school run by clowns, because they don't mean what they say or say what they mean, they're always creating contradictions.
Take, for example this little comparison between the UCSD Principles of Community and The Koala, a newspaper on campus funded by the school through Associated Students...--Read More--

Reclaim the Streets Ends in Police Violence
reclaimer,
Reclaim the Streets was a 3 hour street party with 100-200 people all over downtown with music, puppets, glitter, costumes, dancing, jumping and lots and lots of FUN. Many people joined the party off the street but many were also confused, despite the huge banners saying "Reclaim the Streets" and "Lets Party!"
The night ended with extreme violence from the SDPD. At the orders of Captain CJ Bell, in order to try to arrest a member of the party, an officer grabbed one girl and held her face down on the floor with his knee in her back and all of his weight on her as he held her arm back and pepper sprayed her in the face.

Schwarzenegger Betrays Students on Tuitions
Stewart A. Alexander,
Advocate groups for free education consider the recent tuition hikes for UC and CSU students to be no less than a tax on college students. California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has done nothing to make education affordable for students since he was elected in 2003. In the past the governor’s office has made it clear that education is a right for K-12, but not for higher education.

Support the Cucapa Camp of the Other Campaign
repost by dj lotu5,
Local support for the Cucapá Communities
Since approximately 9000 years ago the Cucapá have lived in the land
adjacent to the Rio Colorado, dedicated fundamentally to fishing. Eighteen years ago the Mexican federal government began passing laws that made it nearly impossible for the indigenous Cucapá to live in these lands. In effect in 1993 the zone was declared an ecological reserve, protected by the general law of ecological equilibrium...
Today there are only 304 Cucapá left. They face immanent extermination
and now they rely on the support of La Otra Campaña with the purpose of
continuing the only productive activity for self sustainability.
Therefore from February 28, to May 3, 2007, in the immediate surroundings of the communities of El Mayor and El Zanjón located in the area of “la Bocana or Delta del Rio Colorado”, the adherents of La Otra Campaña will install a camp of support for the Cucapá community.

freEtech 2007 -- an (un)Conference: san diego, march 25th
why freEtech 2007? Community. Free Software. Openness. All of the values of the Free Software movement are totally violated by O’Reilly publishing’s conferences. These same values are what has made internet culture exciting and vibrant and an important social force, and they are also the words that O’Reilly uses to market its $1500 per seat ETech conference.
If you care about creating and sustaining a technological culture that is accessible to everyone, instead of being accessible to those who have $1500 to blow on a 4 day conference, then help us create freEtech, a free and open unconference in San Diego on March 25th, the day before eTech begins.
