Gringo in Mañanaland: SD Indymedia Film Screening and Discussion

sdindymedia

Please come out and join San Diego Indymedia for our monthly event - a film screening and discussion @ the Metate Infoshop on Friday, August 21, 700pm.

We will be showing Gringo in Mañanaland, a film by DeeDee Hallack that explores the strained relations that Latin America has with the United States. Halleck says at the beginning that the images of Latin America she saw in Hollywood films didn't match the reality she knew growing up in Cuba. She then uses footage of old Hollywood films, newsreels and corporate advertising films to show that, even in the early 20th century, these problematic relations between Latin America and the US were well known to Americans, even if they didn't want to recognize them.

The film will be followed by a discussion of the role of media in perpetuating racism. Additionally, there will be SNAX! drinks! STORYTELLING! media-making!

This last November, Dr. BBBBB’s office said it would refer me to pain management. It has not done so. The options proffered by emergency rooms are opiates, valium, or lots of muscle relaxers and aspirin while I wait for a physical therapist’s assessment and treatment plan that considers this month’s diagnosis by one of my neurologist’s: Ehlers-Danlos. With the exception of last weekend’s intravenous morphine at the hospital, I have opted for aspirins since the car accidents happened in December 2013 and January 2014.

Rally Kicks Off San Diego Pride Events

San Diego's Queer (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Pride events kicked off Friday, July 15 at a rally on the pride festival site in Balboa Park. The featured speakers were New Age author and credentialed minister Marianne Williamson, who talked about marriage equality as a straight supporter who has performed same-sex weddings, and Daniel Hernandez, the young, openly Gay aide to Congressmember Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) who saved her life when she was shot at an outdoor rally in January. But the most powerful speaker was former San Diego Democratic Club president Larry Baza, who powerfully expressed the history of the Queer rights movement and the challenges it faces in the future.

Queer-Oriented Obelisk Store Shut Down by Hellish Fire

author:
Leo E. Laurence, J.D.

Obelisk Bookstore, a major Queer-oriented business on University Avenue in Hillcrest, burned on Wednesday, July 6. Three other businesses in the building were burned out, as were 15 apartments on the second and third floors. Miraculously, none of the residents were injured because none of them were home at the time. Leo E. Laurence, J.D., associate editor of Zenger's Newsmagazine and a former volunteer firefighter in Tijuana, got photos of firefighters containing the blaze (they weren't able to save the Obelisk building but WERE miraculously able to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the block), the true extent of the damage (visible only from the alley behind the building) and the condition of Obelisk's stock after the fire.

Live by the Sword, Die by the Sword: San Diego LGBT Publisher Kills Himself

author:
Rocky Neptun

Our wonderful contribution to humanity, the Gay Liberation Movement, has been high-jacked by those who value profit. We have been tripped up by our successes at inclusion. We must rediscover our roots as activists; aroused by the tension between being one of the herd and being a wild, nonconforming, free spirit. Damn it! We are different. It’s time we started acting like it.
